Chandler is A Great Narrator
Revisado: 09-17-23
I listen to many audio books. I particularly like David Chandler because he offers straight narration. He does include dramatic flair like voicing, but keeps it to a minimum. The book becomes more like story telling.
This is the first Krueger book I’ve listened to. I’ll check out others. The pacing is about right. I like the way he tells us of an in Eden t and then fills in the back story. Many authors tell the back story, switch to another scene, and return to the main story. That works if the listener is just sitting and listening. But I often work as I listen and, at times, have to return to previous portions to find the small back story. I’ve actually lost interest in books when that happens too often. Sadly, it is a style too many engage in. Not Krueger. His pacing is good and he informs the reader/listener as the story progresses.

In these nine essays, Richard Russo provides insight into his life as a writer, teacher, friend, and reader. From a commencement speech he gave at Colby College, to the story of how an oddly placed toilet made him reevaluate the purpose of humor in art and life, to a comprehensive analysis of Mark Twain's value, to his harrowing journey accompanying a dear friend as she pursued gender-reassignment surgery, The Destiny Thief reflects the broad interests and experiences of one of America's most beloved authors.

Could Be A Primer For Readers
Revisado: 01-26-23
Though this is a memoir of writing and the writer, it is an excellent study for readers.
If I write, it is private and for me. Even so, writing well is hard work. Instead of going into things like active vs passive voice, Russo talks about what the writer is trying to say. That, in and of itself is often a mystery that only gets revealed in failure and re-starting. His effort reveals insight that wasn’t there at the beginning of his work.
He uses Dickens as an illustration of a writer becoming an author. There is, to my thinking m, a huge chasm between the two. This book looks into that chasm without staring into the abyss.

Loves His Weapons
Revisado: 12-29-22
I laughed through much of this serious story, being reminded of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. The love affair with the stuff is over the top in both books. The first time I heard the description of some device on such detail right down to the model number, I knew this writer too well.
However, his telling of institutional betrayal was a good tale. Sadly, there are so many fools who believe that the truth lies in their fantasies that another betrayal is afoot. This is a good story from the view point of one in the fog of war.

Too Many Inaccuracies
Revisado: 10-20-22
I’ve enjoyed all of the Box books. This one, not so much. It was too political and contained more than a little political leanings. My first hir came when he was telling how to get to the Palomino. If one drove past the capitol off Speer, one must turn left to get to 20th & Corona at the south end of the points.
The damage in Denver from the riots was incited by the police, as documented by many videos. The city is paying out damages to this day.

A Cheap Attempt
Revisado: 07-28-21
I’ve purchased and listened to nearly two dozen Reacher novels. In the last novel by I began to notice repetitive phrases. This novel is packed with them.
I once had a job in which I needed to write letters. Most were barely more Ivan form letters. I bought a piece of software that allowed me to write phrases, addresses, greetings, etc. Using keyboard shortcuts, I could insert what was needed without writing it again.
This novel was packed with those phrases and sentences. The last novel was bad but this is the worst I’ve ever experienced.
It is poorly written and no more than a cheap attempt form a writer who we know can do better. Maybe he was rushing in order to make his boat payment.

Odd Characterization by Narrator
Revisado: 09-18-19
I’ve listened to most Skink books. I like the gruff characterization by other narrators. Skink here sounds effeminate and imperious. No, that doesn’t work for me when I think about the man.

Living in the desert mountain west puts us face to face with earth history. I’ve hiked along Wingate sandstone cliffs over 350,000,000 years old. 65,000,000 years seems recent from that perspective. I had to listen to this almost straight through.

High Rating, But Less Irony
Revisado: 03-04-19
Irony is a key tool in Hiassen’s books. Rightfully so. It’s a key part of most funny incidents. This book is short on irony and big on heart. This is not one of his best, but it is definitely worth the read.

A Feast for Twain Fans
Revisado: 12-28-18
The wrap-up at the end says it all. It is a reflection of Twain’s life in a menu. It might be more a window into Samuel Clemons than the personae Mark Twain.
