Historia
In the title story of Walk Between the Raindrops, a woman sits down next to a man at a bar and claims she has ESP. In “Thirteen Days,” passengers on a cruise line are quarantined, to horrifying and hilarious effect. And “Hyena” begins simply: “That was the day the hyena came for him, and never mind that there were no hyenas in the South of France, and especially not in Pont-Saint-Esprit—it was there and it came for him.”

a pretty consistently enjoyable collection. the author is subtle and poignant, but definitely not a page-turner.

Eerie
Revisado: 06-04-24
The Hedges was my favorite story, but 5 of 6 were interesting which is way above par for most story collections. Josh Malerman's style is subtle, eerie and undeniably unique, though not for everyone. Some stories have pretty understated or ambiguous endings.

Taryn Cornick believes that the past - her sister's violent death, and her own ill-conceived revenge - is behind her, and she can get on with her life. She has written a successful book about the things that threaten libraries: insects, damp, light, fire, carelessness and uncaring...but not all of the attention it brings her is good.

disjointed
Revisado: 11-25-23
The synopsis on the cover really doesn't give a good representation of the book. The main characters publishing on the dangers to libraries plays little role besides forming the chapter headings. Instead you get a weird mashup between revenge thriller, other dimensions, fae lore, Norse mythology, demon possessions and tech espionage. This might still seem appealing but the characters float aimlessly from one event to the next and the surprise ordinary people show when struck by the fact that Hell is waging war on earth and birds can talk amounts to little more than a shrug and "oh ok". Still 2 stars because the prose is nice and it can be engaging if you try hard to suspend disbelief.

quality creepy pasta
Revisado: 10-18-23
this is not a literary masterpiece. there are no deeper meanings behind the supernatural happenings, no thought provoking character archs or insights into the human condition.
however if you are simply looking for odd creepy stories to pass some time these are much better than others I've seen. little time is wasted in getting to the weird or uncanny. would be 4 stars but they got a bit repetitive towards the end. I can only handle so much first person narration.

Historia
The dense Michigan forest. Haunting wails. The clip-clop of demon hooves on a bridge to nowhere. It’s more than a tall tale to Brenda Jennings, whose sister disappeared in those woods one fateful night. Three years later, on a solo stakeout in the dark, Brenda goes in after her. She’s desperate for answers, and terrified to find what lies waiting on the other side of that bridge.

Malerman is a national treasure.
Revisado: 10-18-23
Malerman is slowly becoming one of my favored horror authors. his short stories are hit or miss for me but they are never run of the mill. this one is a hit.
deep characters, wonderful prose, and expertly executed suspense. such a short story managed to transport me to another world.
the narrator is one of the best I've heard recently as well. she nails every little intonation, pause and emotion, sounding genuinely panicked when the character is in trouble and then as soothing as honey when the character reminisces about the past.

wasted time.
Revisado: 10-18-23
The first thirty minutes are spent on the two characters backstories. it doesn't build any suspense or atmosphere, there are no important details to be revisited. the relationships dont affect anyone's actions. In fact one of the only two main characters is a completely superfluous attempt to give the story context.

dissapointed
Revisado: 10-02-23
After the setup I was fully expecting to love this book. Underground tunnels and caverns are such an underutilized setting for horror, plus there are cults and creatures and cosmic emptiness and all kinds of fascinating subject matter packed in a short novella.
However once the book gets going, exactly where the suspense should peak, the MC has to go on long sob story rants about her past, take a nap, and be endlessly indecisive on whether or not to save her love interest. Not a single character in the story feels real or engaging.
Overall the writing is immature and the author seems more concerned with including graphic trans ideology than the actual story.

Historia
Set in 1906, Dreamhunter describes a world very similar to ours, except for a special place, known simply as "The Place", where only a select group of people can go. These people are called Dreamhunters, and they harvest dreams that are then transmitted to the general public for entertainment, therapy - or terror and political coercion. Inside The Place, 15-year-old Laura finds out what happened to her missing father and uncovers a government secret.

unique and beautiful story
Revisado: 06-02-23
Elizabeth Knox's prose is wonderful. Great characters and rich descriptions lend to a unique world of magical realism.
After the first chapter however (which catches the reader's attention, introducing the setting without feeling overly encyclopedic) the author intersperses each important plot point with pages of family drama, beach vacations and the goings on of boarding school. Dreamhunter focuses more closely on the societal repercussions of a world where dreams are sold as theater, neglecting the conceivable adventures and mysteries possible in "the place". An enjoyable read overall, however, I will likely opt for another Knox book next rather than finish this series.
narrator note: On occasion one can notice odd mouth noises in the audio as well as some poor editing with pauses or words clipped. Though the incredible range of character voices and pleasant voice more than make up for this fault.

It’s the mid-'90s. Grunge and flannel are fading as the Spice Girls and Hot Topic conquer the malls. Cherry gloss glistens on the lips of the youth. Modems hiss as America comes online. And in a fog-drenched cove at the edge of New England, something terrible awakens when a fisherman reels in a gruesome catch: the remains of a young woman. Remains still pulsing with furious life.

drags on a bit.
Revisado: 04-02-23
a neat idea dulled by too many characters and too many pages.
the setup got my hopes up, good atmosphere, some local lore and I think caves are way underutilized in horror.
but it gets old real fast. the author has no idea how caving works so a lot of finer plot points were illogical. the story goes on for so long any tension that it managed to create slowly dissipates and made the end a chore to finish. most of all though the prose is just.. meh. had I read the physical book I do not think I would have finished it but on a long drive it did the trick. 2.5 stars.
