Historia
Things have not been going well for Henry Milch. After a Saturday night clubbing in his beloved West Hollywood, he took one pill too many and ended up banished to Northern Lower Michigan to live on a farm with his ultraconservative grandmother. It was that or rehab. While working a part-time job for the local land conservancy, he stumbles across a dead body in the snow—as if things couldn’t get worse. But then, things take a turn for the better: There’s a reward for information leading to the man’s killer. All Henry has to do is find the murderer and claim the reward.

Flawed protagonist but a good mystery
Revisado: 01-13-23
I bought this book because I was a fan of the authors previous series pinx video, and although this is similar in that it’s a mystery with a gay main character, it’s a very different series but still enjoyable if a little less fun.
Our protagonist here is a drug addict who is in deep denial about being a drug addict. He’s hard to root for at times because his selfishness shines through. Henry is out to solve this murder not to bring a killer to justice, but to get the reward money, so he can head back to LA and get the hell out of small town Michigan. Ironically, this hurts his investigation process since he is determined to solve it all on his own. I assume this series will be about (at least partial) growth for him, which is why I am intrigued to read on. Plus, the author does a good job of writing a mystery no matter the situation, and has a talent for writing passages that are very affecting when you least expect it.
I do hope Henry becomes less of a loner and an overall better person in future installments, along with being able to kick his habit. If I had to put this in a genre, I would say it was a dark comedy mystery.
Jack Meloche did a great job as narrator although I admit I’m not a fan of when when authors reuse narrators for different series but that’s not his fault. I got over it a few hours into the book, and really enjoyed his performance.

I’m straight. So, when a gay guy on the train asked me out on a date, why the hell did I say yes? And why am I excited about seeing him again? Okay, let’s start again.... I thought I was straight for all of my 26 years. I dated women. I slept with women. And yeah, occasionally I’d wondered what it would be like to experiment with a guy. We’ve all done it, right? A couple of times, at least? Only, I never did more than wonder.

Good book with a bad title
Revisado: 06-27-21
As another review mentioned, the title of this book is weird. I don’t know what an alternate title would be however so I’ll leave that up to the author in their infinite wisdom.
This is a cute story of two nerds who fall in love. I appreciated that there was little to no angst in the book, which made it actually feel refreshing. It’s funny and hot at times as well.

Short but sweet

“All stories don’t end the same way, and all roads don’t lead to the same destination.”
I really liked this, short as it was. (I’m glad there is a sequel) The narrator perfectly fit the characters. A nice story of unexpected romance, I love when couples save eachother.

It’s about a dress. A valuable blue sequined dress worn by a famed actress in a film from the 1940s. For some reason, everyone thinks video store owner Noah Valentine has it. Which might not be a big deal, except that it’s connected to the murder of a prominent Hollywood costumer. In the second of the Pinx Video Mysteries, Noah attempts to solve the mystery of the dress.

Great Hollywood Mystery
Revisado: 10-11-20
“So, like, what are you guys? Gay Charlie’s Angels?” “No, we’re just far too nosey for our own good,”
Noah and his friends are entangled in a murder mystery again, this time all about a dress from an old movie. A seemingly very important dress.
There are good twists and turns and interesting characters that pop up that make it really engaging, especially if you have an interest in old hollywood.
This book has a slightly more serious internal tone than the first one as it goes into the struggles of our main character’s daily life maintaining HIV while also keeping it a secret from his best friends & family. But that doesn’t make it any less worthwhile a read. And there are still great moments of humor.
He also has to confront old friends from his past life and his now deceased lover (not literally, this is not a ghost story.) It’s good to see Noah opening up more.
The varied characters are really what make this book shine, along with the writing and good scene setting of early 90s LA, but it must be said the narrator again does a great job in his reading. It’s a perfect match.

Loved it. Great early 90s mystery.
Revisado: 10-11-20
I had liked a few of this author’s previous books and gave this a chance when I saw the audio was out and I’m very glad I did.
I love mystery series that have good characters and have a sense a humor (even in situations that are depressing) and this book delivers on both.
The author has a way with words and I really enjoyed the narrator as well.
The book does a good job setting the scene of early 90s LA and it is interesting hearing the reactions in the aftermath of the LA riots considering what has happened in 2020.
Can’t wait for the full series to hopefully be released on audio.
