Historia
Resourceful, adventurous and utterly indefatigable, Sophy is hardly the mild-mannered girl that the Rivenhalls expect when they agree to take her in. Kind-hearted Aunt Lizzy is shocked; stern Cousin Charles and his humorless fiancée Eugenia are disapproving. With her inimitable mixture of exuberance and grace Sophy soon sets about endearing herself to her family, but finds herself increasingly drawn to her cousin. Can she really be falling in love with him, and he with her? And what of his betrothal to Eugenia?

Adorable
Revisado: 12-08-14
Even my husband, who would rather throw himself off something than read/listen to a regency romance, enjoyed the pieces of this he listened to on a car ride. A crisp story, entertaining Austen-y characters, well read, and very funny. Worth a credit.

A long trip to nowhere
Revisado: 12-08-14
I love time travel books and I picked this one up based on a recommendation from a friend. Lordy, its a rambler. Its not uninteresting per se, its just takes its sweet time going anywhere. Lots of detailed descriptions of the day to day stuff. You start getting annoyed that YOU know something has gone wrong, but that the author wants to keep throwing problems in the way of the protagonists so that THEY dont. I'm 6 hours in and finally gave up. I'm just not that interested in finding out what happens to tolerate 20 more hours of this.

Confusing

I love love love this book but I didn't care of the ensemble theater version of this story. It was confusing and too short.

Meh
Revisado: 12-08-14
The first one didn't blow me away - I thought it was rather silly - but I liked it enough to give book 2 a try, especially since lots of other people seemed to like it. I couldn't finish it. I just felt like I had seen all this before but done much better (The October Daye books for example).

Historia
In this coming of age story, Dodie Smith introduces the visionary and eccentric character of seventeen-year-old Cassandra Mortmain. The youngest daughter in a family of impoverished artists, it is her imagination and writing that takes us away from the ramshackle old English castle where they live, and towards an intriguing tale of husband-hunting and light-hearted sibling rivalry.

Charming little British story that reminds me of something you'd see on Masterpiece or BBC. Would be a great book to study in class in terms of narrative voice and whatnot. I enjoyed it.

Same old, same old
Revisado: 02-25-14
Basically, its The Bachelor set in a fantasy setting. The story talks a lot about clothes and the friendship and cattiness between girls. Our hero is fairly admirable and likable. She's torn between two boys (so tired of this) and since I had a hard time liking one of them so I was always vaguely irritated by her indecision. Her mother is awful. I wont continue to the next book. I don't care enough to spend a credit on it.

Ugh. Disappointing.
Revisado: 12-31-13
I was really excited about this one since so many people seemed to like it. I checked out a few bad reviews but I figured it was the usual overly critical people. But actually, they are right. The story idea is fine but it is poorly written. There are so many times when characters say something or do something that is out of character. Our main character is a highly-trained, bad-ass assassin (which requires self-discipline) but then she speaks and acts like an impatient 12 year old. She loves fancy clothes, but then complains about them.
The end result is that you don't really care about any of the characters - they're shallow and unreliable.
You can tell the author is not writing about things she knows about or has done research on because the scenes lack depth of detail and in some cases, sense. And there are lots of missed opportunities to add action, danger and interest.
To top it all off, I think the narrator really messes up the intent and delivery of a lot of the lines so that everyone sounds spoiled and melodramatic all the time. I seriously considered dropping the audio to actually read the book to make sure the reader wasn't the one ruining it for me.

Gwyneth Shepherd's sophisticated, beautiful cousin Charlotte has been prepared her entire life for traveling through time. But unexpectedly, it is Gwyneth who, in the middle of class, takes a sudden spin to a different era! Gwyneth must now unearth the mystery of why her mother would lie about her birth date to ward off suspicion about her ability, brush up on her history, and work with Gideon, the time traveler from a similarly gifted family that passes the gene through its male line, and whose presence becomes, in time, less insufferable and more essential.

Charming series
Revisado: 11-20-13
I've finished the whole series and can say that they are all quite fun, well written, and interesting. The author handles time travel in a very intelligent and unique way so you're not spending too much time in your head working out the paradoxes. The rest of the plot isn't groundbreaking, but its sense of humor and well-balanced romance make it a worthwhile listen. It's very British and the romance scenes are fairly chaste so it's a good listen for most ages.

from anticipation waiting for the next book to come out! Everything I loved about the first book - real danger, real choices, real dirt and grit. Nobody is perfect and the situation is awful. But there are moments of fun, and laughter and sweetness. We are taking the journey with Evie and I enjoy the heartache. Great book!
