Not Up to the Level of the Smiley Novels
Revisado: 12-17-24
I nearly gave up on this one half way through. The overall plot is forced and ponderous. The pace picks up a bit in the second half, but unfortunately, it doesn't come anywhere near the level of the George Smiley novels. It left me dissatisfied, in the end. Even narrator Jayston didn't seem to know what to do with it. HIs characterizations are sound, but he really had to force himself to read quickly and in an exaggerated, dramatic manner in an attempt to instill life into the plot. Overall, this audiobook is unconvincing, in my opinion.

This is DC Smith's third investigation with the Diver and Diver Associates agency. They have been asked by a member of Norfolk's aristocracy to look into the tragic death of her younger brother, Freddie, the late Lord Thorpe of the title. The inquest verdict was of misadventure, but it isn't long before Smith begins to suspect there has been a serious miscarriage of justice.

Another Great DC Plot
Revisado: 11-18-24
I thoroughly enjoyed the latest of the DC series. Peter Grainger has obviously built a solid following of listeners/readers, and for good reason. The plot moved a bit more slowly than some of the others in the series, so if you haven't listened to his books yet, you might want to go back to the earlier ones first. However, he continues to make the appropriate amount of references to earlier plots so that uninitiated listeners have some background without overdoing it.
Of course, the author-narrator team is vital, and Gildart Jackson delivers again. His narration is so effective that there are a few times where he might even imbue a bit too much dramatacism into every single word. A few times midway I thought maybe he should just let a more neutral tone flow a bit (bordering on excessive sentiment a few times), but the final chapters flowed really well.
The other thing, without spoiling it, is the obvious addition of self references to the author-narrator audiobook relationship now added to the plot. The thinly veiled allusions to Grainger-Jackson provided a few comical moments, but I would not recommend he expound upon it further in future plots. (It could get overbearing, though it wasn't in this book.)
As always, looking forward to the next series title, along with the Kings Lake series. Really too bad we don't get the quality of narrator for the Willows and Lane series. Still, bravo for DC!

If anyone could be considered a Russian counterpart to the infamous British double-agent Kim Philby, it was Oleg Gordievsky. The son of two KGB agents and the product of the best Soviet institutions, the savvy, sophisticated Gordievsky grew to see his nation's communism as both criminal and philistine. He took his first posting for Russian intelligence in 1968 and eventually became the Soviet Union's top man in London, but from 1973 on he was secretly working for MI6.

Fantastic Cold War Account
Revisado: 09-10-24
This book is really geared toward those who remain fascinated by Cold War era espionage. The account is gripping in its own way, especially in the tense chapters near the book's end. The narration is well done and thoroughly appropriate for this non-fiction genre. It is more a question of the type of listener who will find it most entertaining: Those with hardy attention spans and already knowledgeable in Cold War history will remain glued to the narrative start to finish (as I did). It is not going to be appealing, however, to those interested in fictional action thrillers and in need of constant narrative shifts. I found it thrilling.

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Teaming up with a suave private investigator, a glamorous granny and the probable love of his life, Jonathon must confront his greatest fears - including talking to girls and balaclava-clad killers - and answer some very difficult questions.

Comically Irreverent but Windy
Revisado: 08-31-24
I loved the first three quarters of this. Shevlin is one of the few 21st century authors to make me laugh, and I laughed a lot. I love that he doesn't prostrate himself to the predictable militant critics accusing him of "misogyny" or toady to the contemporary prevalence of forcing 10 themes of supposed "underrepresentation" into the plot. I'm gratified to see that catastrophic wit still exists.
That said, he lost pace in the final 20 chapters or so. As other reviews have noted, the static meandering and lengthy digressions become excessive, long after the "perpetual astonishment" theme has been pounded into the listener. It really became abnoxious from when Jane is climbing up and in through the back at night and I almost gave up by chapter 88. The conclusion was clever but underwhelming.
I may still give the other series novels a go, but not for a while as I work to regain my patience. Narrator was excellent.

She's just watching, thinking about it again, when a big flash car pulls up outside. No one gets out. Then the doors of the bar open and people appear. Two men and a youngish woman, and one of the men has a hold on the woman's arm. It looks as if they're having words. Then this all happens quickly—they push the woman towards the car, one of the back doors opens, and they manhandle her inside. Sarah hears a muffled shout from the woman and the car pulls away. It's all over in a few seconds.

Hooked on this Series 5
Revisado: 07-01-24
Like all of the DC and Kings Lake books, this one keeps you glued to every moment. It's one of the things I find uncanny about the Grainger-Jackson team. We don't get to hear much about the personal lives of the main characters this time, which I found a bit odd. I trust we'll get caught up on those aspects in Book 6, which I hope will be out soon!

Jo told him the phone call had been about a woman who wanted to have her husband declared dead. Smith thought for a moment and then said, 'Hmm. There must be a few million women in this country who feel like that. I take it her husband's been missing for a while and she's decided it's time to move on. In the absence of a body, which is always a nuisance, she wants Diver and Diver to confirm there's no proof he's alive. And I've told Jason a dozen times I'm not getting involved in anything matrimonial. I have enough trouble sorting out my own relationships.'

Great interweaving of the PI firm, from what it was when it first appeared many books ago. A good transitional point to the King's Lake series, though I hope we might see some more of DC in the future!

I'm glad to see the author take a chance with shifting the plot to a new backdrop within the series. DC's new role works, in many ways, but I admit that I already miss the "old days" of books 1-8. And again, there seem to be a few inexplicably lapses in judgment (on DC's part) that border on excessive authorial license. Still, it's great work.

Historia
When 14-year-old Zoe Johnson doesn't come home on a Monday night in early December, the alarm bells in Kings Lake Central police station do not ring straight away - after all, she's from the Dockmills, one of the toughest estates in the town. But for Detective Sergeant DC Smith, due to retire in just three weeks' time, there are some strange echoes of the case that has haunted him for the past 13 years. Maybe it's simply his over-developed sense of irony, or maybe, in his final days as a police officer, Smith must look once more into the eyes of a serial killer.

This one is intense, and one of the few in the series where I have to ask why the protagonist suddenly loses his sense of judgement for a few critical moments. The plot is gripping and chilling. I'm a huge fan of the narrator, but I'm not sure that the performance of the final scene was done in the right proportion (really the only segment that I question Jackson's approach in the entire series).

Historia
Mark Randall lay dead in a field near Lowacre long before Smith had done what he had to do in Belfast. By the time he went back to work, the investigation was well underway. "It's not my case," he says more than once, and he really doesn't need it to be; he has enough to think about as it is. But going around the Norfolk countryside dotting the i's and crossing the t's, speaking to the local farmers and the Brothers of St. Francis from Abbeyfields, Smith begins to suspect that the investigation might be heading in entirely the wrong direction.

As one who feels that the clergy get an excessively bad rap in the media, I think Grainger strikes a decent balance between the human and divine sides in those who choose the religious life.
