Just as Emmalee prepares to escape her hardscrabble life in Red Chert holler, Leona dies tragically. Grief-stricken, Emmalee decides she'll make Leona's burying dress, but there are plenty of people who don't think the unmarried Emmalee should design a dress for a Christian woman - or care for a child on her own.

This story rings true in depicting the lifestyles, troubles and traditions of small mountain communities where the factory, the church and the funeral director hold sway. The performance is excellent. The characters are well developed.

Good read
Revisado: 02-16-25
Some interesting twists and turns. And I must admit, a lot of things I didn’t see coming. I usually love a well planned mystery who done it like this one. This time, however I found the characters so despicable and the story so dark that I didn’t enjoy as much as I might. There were simply too many horrible characters and too few redeeming ones.
The story was very well constructed. The reader was excellent. This book was just not for me.

A riveting novel in which old friends must excavate the formative event of their childhood - a murder - and determine how to pit truth against justice. Hutch Van Buren is 15 years old, playing sports and searching for arrowheads in a small industrial town in Ohio with his three closest friends when an altercation between the comrades and Petey Sanchez, a troubled 17-year-old, leads to Petey’s accidental death. The struggle between what is legal and what is moral.
Revisado: 08-12-24
Favorite Sons is an excellent book. The struggle in every life between what is right and what one can live with is real. Consequences cannot be avoided no matter how exceptional we think we are. This author does a great job of spinning an emotional web to entrap good boys and bad men. The narrator is perfectly suited to the character.
As a mature woman who is not crazy about politicians, legal wrangling nor manipulative liars, I did not expect to like this book. However, it is so well done that even I am an enthusiastic fan. Enjoy!

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Honest and insightful
Revisado: 07-19-24
I recognize these people, I recognize their actions and their problems. It seems that a lot of critics without firsthand experience like to claim that this view is inaccurate or unfair. They are wrong. This book is painfully honest. It amazes me that anyone could be so lovingly insightful regarding such brutal behaviors. Most of us try to hide our “dirty laundry“ and spend a lifetime using our childhood traumas as an excuse for our own negative behavior. This author loves the very people who hurt him and finds the strength to succeed while holding his traumatic experiences up into full light and in full view of the everyone who dares look.
Very brave. Very honest. Very important. Very impressive.

Sue Benedict wasn’t giving out treats, so she got the trick. It was one hell of a trick. The killer, who made no effort to hide his identity, had vanished without a trace–just like the one witness who might actually have known what happened that night. And 12 years later, the case is as cold as Sue Benedict and the icy December wind coming in off the East River.

I like these books very much. My husband and I both enjoy listening to them. They are well written fun crime stories with intriguing twists at the end of each. The main character is brilliant and that is always refreshing. His strength and intelligence, not to mention his skills of observation make him a formidable opponent for any of these well written criminals. All the characters are well formed and fully fleshed out.
I do think it would’ve been nice if someone had given the writer a thesaurus. He doesn’t seem to have any other words to describe the human backside other than, ass. I am really tired of everybody putting their ass somewhere. Surely they could, rest their backside, park their rump, prop their derrière, drop their bum, flop their fanny, or simply sit, etc.
The only other complaint I have is that the “beautiful“ female detective is mannerless to the point of being disgusting at times. I suppose her piggish habits are supposed to make her seem more human and real to us. However, anyone over the age of two, who talks with their mouth full is simply ill mannered and extremely unattractive. I believe that her partner is presented to us as a man with a bit more polish. It is always jarring to be reminded that he is not repulsed by her bad manners. Maybe it’s just me; I do have a vivid imagination.
The narrator is unmatched in making every character he portrays believable. I can be completely swept into believing whatever he wants me to believe. I love the “film noir gruff” of his voice for these books. He’s perfect!

Too much wasted time.
Revisado: 01-01-24
These women have a great concept. HOWEVER, they are so delighted by themselves that they think I want to listen to their girlfriend chitchat. I don’t. The valley girl uplifting of the end of every sentence and the double martini lunch chat is just too much nonsense. I have tried several different episodes hoping to hear an interesting story. NOPE. It is not possible to wade through the silliness trying to get to the interesting part. Can’t do it. Not sure it’s even there. At least they are having fun. Giggle on girls!

Superheroes have always been Leia Birch Briggs' weakness. One tequila-soaked night at a comics convention, the usually level-headed graphic novelist is swept off her barstool by a handsome and anonymous Batman. It turns out the caped crusader has left her with more than just a nice, fuzzy memory. She's having a baby boy - an unexpected but not unhappy development in the 38-year-old's life.

Good story but even more
Revisado: 12-31-23
The story is well imagined and told. However, more than a story is contained within. This book is a lesson. It is a history lesson about the south. The south of my long life is the one described here. Friendships that cross class and/or color boundaries were and are the norm in the south. Horrible negative experiences of class or color are because of small minded cruel individuals or groups. Those nasty folks ruin things for everyone.
This book is a lesson about human relationships, about race relations, about generational relationships, about mistakes and pain, about weakness and responsibility. My 4 star review is based on the fact that I felt too often that I was being enlightened rather than swept into another world. It is a believable but yet unknown world that I want to inhabit when I read or listen to a novel. I didn’t get that experience in Almost Sisters. I felt the author’s effort to make a point was distracting. All that being said, it is a good story with wonderful characters and a great point well made.

Love these people!
Revisado: 12-23-23
I cannot call them characters, because I have come to know them, to respect them, and to cheer for them, as good and strong females fighting through life, and through the challenges of being a woman in this world. They are not fictional characters. They are people and lives and experiences and disappointments and hopes and battles and dignity, and sorrow and loss and horror and struggle and fear and weakness, and strength and sin and redemption.
I did not expect to like this book so much. I’m not really into chick lit. My mistake, this is not to be taken lightly. I loved this book and have recommended it. As a mature woman, I understand the struggles. I appreciate the talent that was required to sweep me along in a story that I had kept in my library for months and did not know I wanted to listen. I loved it. It is a very good book. A VERY good book.

Historia
Into Keldale's pastoral web of old houses and older secrets comes Scotland Yard Inspector Thomas Lynley, the eighth earl of Asherton. Along with the redoubtable Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, Lynley has been sent to solve a savage murder that has stunned the peaceful countryside. For fat, unlovely Roberta Teys has been found in her best dress, an ax in her lap, seated in the old stone barn beside her father's headless corpse. Her first and last words were "I did it. And I'm not sorry".
