The worst novel I've ever read

I found this novel offensively bad. If I weren't reading it for a book club I'd have quit reading by the halfway mark. The author uses shock and explicit (bad) erotica to (presumably, given the reviews) engage readers, but in the end there's no substance. The plot was paltry and predictable, to the very end. Characters were entirely one dimensional, with zero development, and all equally as loathsome. The author tells the story via letters, rather than engaging us in it. I got it in audio format and the narrator is oddly robitic reading in Verity's voice. There's nothing I liked about it.

Funny, charming, heartwarming!

Lighthearted, contemporary mystery with quirky, but winsome characters. Good pace and story with surprisingly tender moments. Fun fun fun! Count me a new fan!

Formulaic and patriarchal

No female can enter the storyline (or room even) without explicit descriptions of her body and desirability to men. And the plots are predictable and bland.

The voice actor, however, is very good.

Very generic detective series with the usual detective with a photographic memory. Yawn. Zero originality or twists in any of the 3 stories I listened to. The voice actor was fabulous, though.

great to open discussions

i reviewed the book below. I wanted to add that I think it is a great book to open discussion around male/female relations, feminism, patrirachy, gender roles, domestic labour, the intetest in true crime, and more. I suggested it for a lical reading group and the library is ordering copies. I think it would be great in high school curriculum, as well.

Powerful

Contemporary stories with a deeper message often err by narrating the message vs creating a compelling, emersive story to get you there yourself. This book gets it right. Too, the characters were complex enough to be authentic. It shines a light on an underexplored aspect of crime stories, but remains enjoyable. I think it would be great compulsive reading for high school lit class.

Not a thing of interest

Purchased this after reading she was a great mystery writer. Got to chapter 11 and quit. Not a character or element to this story that is remotely intriguing. Nothing. Reading about slugs would be more interesting.
