Laz is a side-stepper: a teen with the incredible power to jump his consciousness to alternate versions of himself in parallel worlds. All his life, there was no mistake that a little side-stepping couldn’t fix. Until Laz wakes up one day in a cloning facility on a seemingly abandoned Earth. Laz finds himself surrounded by hundreds of other clones, all dead, and quickly realizes that he too must be a clone of his original self.

Clever idea but gets bogged down in places
Revisado: 01-20-23
Overall I enjoyed this title from one of my favorite authors. It was well read and such a unique idea that it held me even though the pacing was off about half way through the book. It got bogged down in some repetitive and unnecessary detail in places but ended up being a more hopeful story than I thought it would be.

Overall a great read
Revisado: 09-09-22
Overall this was a great read but the ending goes on too long before the resolution making the climax of the story almost an afterthought. Narration is good apart from Mercy’s voice which is juvenile and mousey sounding and did not do the depth of the character justice.

Adventure without tension
Revisado: 07-01-21
This has lots of adventure but without the underpinning characterization to create tension or even help you care what happens to any of the characters. I love this author’s previous work but this one didn’t keep me interested or invested. I kept hoping it would get better but some of it seemed cliche, much was predictable, and there was far too little to the characters to make them interesting

Tried so hard to like this
Revisado: 05-27-21
I gave the second book in the series a chance if for no other reason than the morality of the characters was better than most YA fiction but the main character is so whiny and little actually happens in the book because so much time is spent describing how she feels about everything. There are few if any surprises and the “aha” moments the main character experiences are more like a “duh” for the reader. It’s unbelievable that an 18 year old girl would come up with such extremely obvious insights that the more experienced military men would not. I know I am not her target audience but my daughter would also not enjoy the repetition of such words/phrases as “predatory” over and over again to describe how the main love interest looks at her. It’s just too poorly written to continue. Even though the book ends on a cliffhanger, I am not interested enough in the characters to want to see how it ends. Disappointed

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Fantastic book- even better than The Martian
Revisado: 05-15-21
If anyone is looking for a a fanatic summer read, I highly recommend Project Hail Mary. It’s by Andy Weir, who wrote The Martian, only this time he proved he could write an amazing science fiction novel without the expletives. It is pure science fiction (rare to find that genre anymore without the fantasy elements) and the science is extremely well done. Very, very creative “what if’s” and a few total inventions but he worked hard to make the rest of the story hold together well with science fact. Charming story that hooks you from start to finish with lots of surprises along the way. The audio version is also very well done, with believable narration that adds to the story. I was sad when it was over.

Mixed Feelings
Revisado: 01-30-21
I really don’t enjoy magic so lots of the descriptions were rather dull for me. I almost gave up about 12 chapters in and then it got a little better and more suspenseful. I love this author so I stuck in there. The book has an undertone of sadness almost all the way through that doesn’t really let up (can’t explain without spoilers), the young/old parts were awkward (sometimes cringeworthy) and tough to pull off, and I really wish he’d chosen a professional voice artist rather than reading it himself as it emphasized the age and sadness of the main character for me rather than the plot twists that kept me mildly interested enough to finish. I really wanted to like it but this wasn’t this author’s best work in my opinion.

Good premise but not well executed
Revisado: 08-15-20
I liked this idea. But I feel like the author was always fighting its sci fi elements instead of truly exploring them and embracing them. The use of second person was weird and distracting. At times the book felt like it was more about autism and the merits of various therapies than it was about the true storyline and I think the authors own autistic son made it hard for him to root out unnecessary passages relating to the son’s autism in the book. And honestly it was just slow. I know it was a psychological story rather than a thriller but it just didn’t keep me interested enough to care about the characters. They were all so flawed I didn’t really care what happened to them. I only finished it because I try and finish most books I start.

Compelling story!
Revisado: 02-13-20
I loved this story. It kept me riveted and I will be sad to say goodbye to the characters. Written with vivid descriptions, superb pacing, and characters you wish you knew- this is one of those rare stories that was a great read and also a richly woven tale. Literary and enjoyable both. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Quirky and well-written
Revisado: 10-07-19
This story is charming despite a somewhat dark storyline. I love the quirky characters who are so well drawn they seem like people you know or want to know. The clever dialogue, dramatic tension, and excellent pacing make it hard to put down. Surprises throughout. Moments I laughed out loud and moments that brought tears. Excellent narrator. Highly recommend!
