Historia
In April 1942, Lale Sokolov, a Slovakian Jew, is forcibly transported to the concentration camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau. When his captors discover that he speaks several languages, he is put to work as a Tätowierer (German for tattooist), tasked with permanently marking his fellow prisoners. Imprisoned for more than two and a half years, Lale witnesses horrific atrocities and barbarism - but also incredible acts of bravery and compassion. Risking his own life, he uses his position to exchange jewels and money from murdered Jews for food to keep his fellow prisoners alive.

hope outlives horror, and love reigns supreme
Revisado: 03-31-24
a spectacular story of hope, determination, survival, and pragmatism. but even more than that, it is a story of deep, deep love in the midst and the aftermath of the greatest horror in the history of mankind.

Revisado: 03-22-24
stories had moments of imagination, but otherwise too predictable. prose was bland and the characters alternated between dull, one, dimensional or just plain unlikable. narration was the most redeeming quality.

Historia
Paul Bäumer is just 19 years old when he and his classmates enlist. They are Germany’s Iron Youth who enter the war with high ideals and leave it disillusioned or dead. As Paul struggles with the realities of the man he has become, and the world to which he must return, he is led like a ghost of his former self into the war’s final hours. All Quiet is one of the greatest war novels of all time, an eloquent expression of the futility, hopelessness and irreparable losses of war.

a brutal story told so personally that you are there, in the mud, cold heat misery, joy, senselessness and horror of wwi. but the story is not just historical. sadly, it's as timeless as ever. a must read for everyone,.

Historia
He is a man capable of abandoning two sailors in an open boat, yet he is an avid and thoughtful reader of the moral philosophers. He is Wolf Larsen, captain of the seal-hunting Ghost and the unforgettable protagonist of one of the world's great sea novels. Tormented by his own convictions, Larsen is an enigma both fascinating and repellent to his reluctant crewman, Humphrey Van Weyden. Throughout their long and perilous voyage together, the captain's ruthless belief in the survival of the fittest is pitted against Van Weyden's "civilization".

interesting, but pompous and sappy, too
Revisado: 08-12-23
it might just be the era in which it was written, so overlook some of the 'fragile female' remarks. the hero is so full of himself that he alternately needs a trophy and a fainting couch. the villain is a bit too one dimensional, portrayed as a skilled and intelligent sailor, but full of pure malevolence. the sealing and ship handling were interesting peeks into history. what ruined the story for me? the romance was soooo sappy that I just wanted the whole book to be over.

Historia
There are few characters in literature more iconic than J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan, the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up. Originally introduced in 1902 in another Barrie novel (The Little White Bird), Peter's story was expanded as a standalone novel in 1911 and since then has been memorably adapted for the movies, for television, and for stage.
Now, actress Lily Collins (The Blind Side, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones) brings new, youthful energy to Peter's magical adventures.

if you're expecting a tender children's story experience, think again. the original is much darker in places. narration is good, but can't offset the bleaker moments. overall, a classic, so worth the read, but not my favorite story.

tiresome, mostly pointless and pompous
Revisado: 12-10-22
so many metaphors, so little to say. i found his writing style vascillatibg between muckraking and pontificating to the extent that his theme got lost in the ramblings. depictions of some areas of the supply chain were so grossly inaccurate, (trucking) it made me wonder where else he had gotten it wrong. I enjoyed parts of the book (slawsa) but struggled to identify his overall theme or point. we eat, the supply chain is messy. got it. anything else? ugh. won't be searching for books by this author any time soon.

Historia
My Man Jeeves, first published in 1919, introduced the world to affable, indolent Bertie Wooster and his precise, capable valet, Jeeves. Some of the finest examples of humorous writing found in English literature are woven around the relationship between these two men of very different classes and temperaments. Where Bertie is impetuous and feeble, Jeeves is coolheaded and poised.

Revisado: 02-21-22
The book is both deeply philosophical, yet practical and able to be applied now for virtually everyone. Canada, recognize your native son as a national treasure. Peterson addresses the hard truths with humor, compassion, and fierceness, as needed. I thank God for having found his writings and lectures. Read his book and become a better person, perhaps much better than you could even imagine possible.
