A very nice blend of genres that work really well
Revisado: 07-13-23
Cyberpunk post apocalyptic dystopia + urban fantasy secret war are two very specific genres that I didn't expect working so well. I'm glad they did. Also I like that the characters aren't very wish fulfilly/a power fantasy, with proper faults and flaws. I will be pre-ordering any sequels.

Great but too short!
Revisado: 03-24-21
Its an excellent snapshot of a potentially interesting world. I suggest checking it out and I hope to see more from this author!
On a side note for some reason Audible only let me rate it 1 star from some reason so if its still 1 stars disregard that.

Historia
Peter Stone is a poor, black vampire who is wondering where his nightclub, mansion, and sports car is. Instead, he is working a minimum wage job during the night shift, as being a vampire isn't all that impressive in a world where they've come out to mortals. Exiled from the rich and powerful undead in New Detroit, he is forced to go back when someone dumps a newly-transformed vampire in the bathroom of his gas station's store.

Its pretty good
Revisado: 10-17-17
A good paranormal book, vampires and werewolves and all that. Its sold as a comedy and ya it has an air of humor about it, but its not 'have to stop the book for 5 minutes because your too busy laughing to pay attention' kind of funny. Still a good book though, 10/10, would buy sequel.

Historia
Mia Corvere has found her place among the Blades of Our Lady of Blessed Murder, but many in the Red Church hierarchy think she’s far from earned it. Plying her bloody trade in a backwater of the Republic, she’s no closer to ending the men who destroyed her familia; in fact, she’s told directly that Consul Scaeva is off limits. But after a deadly confrontation with an old enemy, Mia's suspicions about the Red Church’s true motives begin to grow.

Historia
For eons, conquering dungeons has been the most efficient way to become a strong adventurer. Although not everything is as straightforward as it seems. Several questions have always plagued the minds of those who enter these mythical places of power: why are there so many monsters? Where do the amazing weaponry and heavy gold coins come from? Why does the very air fill with life-giving energies? Cal has all of the answers to these age-old questions, for a very simple reason. He is a Dungeon Heart.

Pretty Shwanky
Revisado: 05-24-17
Where does Dungeon Born rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Among the top 10 at least. I'd give a more definite number but I can't remember which book I own right now.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I liked Cal, his innocent outlook coupled with his adventurer murdering tendencies was rather enjoyable. To be fair I enjoyed all the characters in this book.
Which character – as performed by Vikas Adam – was your favorite?
I have no real preference, he did a good job.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
No, this book is better enjoyed as a solid brick of literary goodness.

Historia
Tesser, the dragon of life itself, is one of seven: Earth’s primordial draconic guardians, destined to oversee its development and safety. Species rose and fell, and 10,000 years ago...Tesser disappeared. The golden dragon woke up this morning, buried deep beneath the city of Boston, with no idea how he got there, and no idea how humanity grew so fast and learned so much while he was away. He is lost, a fish out of water. Where is the magic? He’s got a lot of catching up to do if he’s going to find his missing sister and stop an incursion of daemons from beyond the Veil.

HERE BE DRAGONS! *the book says* Meh... *I say*
Revisado: 08-09-16
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Teenage boys would probably get a kick put of this book. The writing level of the book does feel geared towards them.
What was most disappointing about Chris Philbrook’s story?
The setting and themes of this book do have potential. but the juvenile vibes (needless over sexualization, tasteless swearing) and clunky dialogue hurt the tone of the story. Don't get me wrong I'm not against sex and a well placed F-bomb in my books, but only when used tastefully or to get a point across. Not just for the sake of T&A. Also the way people talk by just explaining everything may seem like a way for characterization but it just comes off as super unnatural and clunky. The last thing that bugged me was that Tesser is too much of a Nancy Sue, there is no sense of danger with him around because hes pretty much a god.
Would you be willing to try another one of James Foster’s performances?
James Foster did a pretty good job, I got no beef with him.
What character would you cut from Tesser: A Dragon Among Us?
Spoon, he kinda just shows up, gets scared, freaks out, chills for about a minute, freaks out again, shoots a demon, and becomes Tesser's friend. They literally had about two conversations before he jumps on Tesser's band wagon and is considered his friend.
Any additional comments?
If you buy this book don't expect a master piece, but I've listened to worse. As for the author he does have some things going for him, but also does have a lot he needs to improve on.

Everybody hates necromancers. Death magic? It’s disgusting. And dangerous. For Conor, it’s also the skill that pays the bills. The medication that keeps him cancer free is expensive, and he’s terrified to die. He should be. Death doesn’t like being played. When the promise of a big payout for a small bit of thievery presents itself, Conor is all in.

If you like Shadowrun this is your jam.
Revisado: 04-08-15
The book does have many similarities to the popular table top game shadowrun (fantasy in the future) but don't let that get you down. This is still a pretty cool book, and if the author ever releases a sequel I'm totally on that like flies to honey.
