Historia
Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

Historia
Two weeks before his twenty-first birthday, Las Vegas native Bobby Ingersoll finds out he’s inherited a crushing gambling debt from his scumbag father. The debt is owed to an even scummier bag named Fraser Ruphart who oversees his bottom-rung criminal empire from the classy-adjacent Trump International Hotel. Bobby’s prospects of paying off the note, which comes due the day he turns twenty-one, are about as dim as the sign on the tower’s façade.

1: write a review explaining what i liked about the book
2: write a review explaining how reviews are bullshit and are full of lies and manipulation so leaving one is pointless
3: write a review about how i missed out on the dice bag, so now my balls are cold because i have nothing to put them in
4: write a review about how free will is bullshit, anyway. so letting dice decide my decisions is the ultimate form of atheism. include vaguely-related tangents about how much mushrooms ive done
5: write a mean, untrue review saying "I would give it LESS than 1 star!!", but give it 5 stars instead
6: write out my list of options in place of a review

Historia
This riveting narrative explores the lives of six remarkable female pharaohs, from Hatshepsut to Cleopatra - women who ruled with real power - and shines a piercing light on our own perceptions of women in power today. Female rulers are a rare phenomenon - but thousands of years ago in ancient Egypt, women reigned supreme. But throughout human history, women in positions of power were more often used as political pawns in a male-dominated society. What was so special about ancient Egypt that provided women this kind of access to the highest political office?

if you like hillary clinton, you'll like this book. this book is created with the assumption that the only reason hillary wasn't elected was sexism. that's a lot of why she wasn't elected, but for most of the people i know, they were concerned with voting for her for the whole "no-fly-zone" disaster idea. i don't want wwiii. i think more women in power coinciding with fewer wars throughout the world isn't a coincidence at all, but hillary clinton is an exception.
with that out of the way, i didn't find the book to be intellectually sober, mostly just the author saying a bunch of stuff and making assumptions with little to back them up. bummer because i think if you trimmed all that shit out, this would be a great (although shorter) book. the author is an expert on egyptology, which is cool. maybe she should lean on that instead for her next book

Historia
In this explosive new book, Sam Harris tears down the wall between scientific facts and human values, arguing that most people are simply mistaken about the relationship between morality and the rest of human knowledge. Harris urges us to think about morality in terms of human and animal well-being, viewing the experiences of conscious creatures as peaks and valleys on a "moral landscape".

waking up was one of the most valuable books i've ever read. nothing comes close to it. then, i tried reading his other books and got bored. i wasn't raised by religious people, so i don't think most of his other books are compelling to me. i understand the appeal, but find them to be preaching to the choir. while i know i didn't get much out of his other books because I'm not the intended audience, i still felt disappointed that they didn't have the same impression on me as waking up did. this book also hasn't come close to waking up for me, but i was relieved to have gotten such enjoyment out of it. i've never heard anyone talk about the moral landscape's subject matter in this way before. i found myself disappointed when the book ended. id highly recommend this one

Historia
Data is fundamental to the modern world. From economic development, to healthcare, to education and public policy, we rely on numbers to allocate resources and make crucial decisions. But because so much data fails to take into account gender, treating men as the default and women as atypical, bias and discrimination are baked into our systems. And women pay tremendous costs for this bias in time, money, and often with their lives. Celebrated feminist advocate Caroline Criado Perez investigates the shocking root cause of gender inequality and research in Invisible Women.

she tries to hold Metroid by Nintendo as an example of feminism because at the end of the game it's revealed that Samus is a woman. i think that would be a good point to make if it weren't for the fact that you get a striptease based on how fast the game is completed. that was put in by male game developers because they knew 16-year-old boys in the 80's would like the game if they saw a scantily-clad pixel lady, and would be more inclined to beat it faster/play it more if they heard their friends say "dude if you beat the game fast enough she gets naked!"
this makes me skeptical of how other facts in the book are presented. most of it's good though. try finding motorcycle jackets for women that fit and aren't advertised as "pillion," or "passenger" gear

Richard Dawkins' brilliant reformulation of the theory of natural selection has the rare distinction of having provoked as much excitement and interest outside the scientific community as within it. His theories have helped change the whole nature of the study of social biology, and have forced thousands to rethink their beliefs about life.

this audiobook is full of interruptions by the author that are probably harmless in the physical text, but end up destroying the audiobook. it's a bunch of "Wha- what I meant was!" Every sentence, clarifying arguments that already make sense. the people he's clarifying stuff for were never listening in the first place, making it all the more pointless.
