I really like real historic fiction, but this was neither historically accurate nor well written. Church propaganda only. I listened simply because I was too lazy to choose something new while I worked on a project.

I especially loved recognizing places by their description in this book long before they are recognized by modern names. The Snake River, the Dallas, the the Tetons as well as others come alive as newly seen by European decedents. The doom of the Astorian party as well as that of the native way of life weigh heavy, and yet connections to today’s life in the Pacific Northwest make this an enchanting and epic story.

This book really changed my thinking about the power and impact of slavery on the economy. I had always thought of it as a social tragedy and injustice. I never saw it as an economic machine that literally drove production and enabled the industrial revolution, while harvesting cotton and decimating lives. Though it was very well performed, I wish I had physically read the book rather than listened to it, because I think the statistics would have had more impact in print. I found myself going back and listening to the statistics time and again to wrap my head around them. Absolutely staggering. If you don't have the time to sit with the book, it's still incredibly valuable.

What would have made Titans better?

The basic idea of this story is intriguing, however in reality it was predictable and laughably cheezy at times.

This isn't a genre I normally like, I have been passing this up for others on my wish list for a long time. Glad I finally got to it. Normally takes me a week to get through an audio book of this length. I finished listening to it in two days. Beautifully written. Almost poetic at times.

If you could sum up The Chaperone in three words, what would they be?

I admit a bias because my grandmother was a contemporary of Louise. It was easy for me to picture my grandmother sitting next to Cora at the picture show. Cora reminded me so much of the practical perseverence that is common amongst my Kansas female relatives. I loved the dialogue, though there was something not quite right about the accent as read by Ms. McGovern. It is more than forgiven. This book was a delightful surprise. It reminds us that the circumstances our families must live with are not new, but thankfully just a little more acceptable. I certainly hope there is more to come. Wichita during the war years had the Boeing factory full of Rivet Annie's. Surely there is a story there!

What other book might you compare The Chaperone to and why?

A little like Water for Elephants. Life in show biz is hard on the soul.

Which scene was your favorite?

I loved the scene in Grand Central Station with Cora and her mother. It was so realistic.
