Historia
The tangled lives of three generations evoke a vanished world in this, the first volume of the Cazalet Chronicle. Home Place, Sussex, 1937. The English family at home.... For two unforgettable summers they gathered together, safe from the advancing storm clouds of war. In the heart of the Sussex countryside these were still sunlit days of childish games, lavish family meals and picnics on the beach.

Historia
In this coming of age story, Dodie Smith introduces the visionary and eccentric character of seventeen-year-old Cassandra Mortmain. The youngest daughter in a family of impoverished artists, it is her imagination and writing that takes us away from the ramshackle old English castle where they live, and towards an intriguing tale of husband-hunting and light-hearted sibling rivalry.

The perfect pairing of story and reader.

This story was written in an era when it was accepted that a woman’s coming of age would be focused on her love and admiration for a man. From my vantage point, nearly one hundred years, later it disappoints.

Narrator

I found the narrators, the Irish accent difficult at times. But, since I’m not familiar with the real deal, it didn’t seem false to me. What was distracting is the narrator’s interpretation of Dr. Green. I would have portrayed him as a brooding sort of psychiatrist, rather than officious. definitely worth listening to anyway.

Historia
Contemptuous of their parents, who pass their days in a stupor of liquor, drugs, and sex, the children feel neglected and suffocated at the same time. When a destructive storm descends on the summer estate, the group's ringleaders - including Eve, who narrates the story - decide to run away, leading the younger ones on a dangerous foray into the apocalyptic chaos outside.

Synchronicity
Revisado: 11-14-22
This production is the rare occasion when the reader and what is read are perfectly in sync. And it is true. Xe Sands is the only American voice I’ve listened to that isn’t a self conscious exercise in elocution. Rather, it is true to the novel’s characters, plot and spirit. Thank you both for giving us a glimpse into a future that truly is hard to comprehend for our grandchildren. But we must.

Historia
In the late 1960s, riding the crest of the counterculture movement, Cea's family left a comfortable existence in California to live off the land in the Canadian wilderness. But unlike most commune dwellers of the time, the Persons weren't trying to build a new society - they wanted to escape civilization altogether. Led by Cea's grandfather Dick, they lived a pot-smoking, free-loving, clothing-optional life under a canvas tipi without running water, electricity, or heat for the bitter winters.

Historia
Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

For this reader, Ms. Stevenson makes it possible to access the complexity of language in this monumental work of nineteenth century literature. She brings to life the landscape, cultural setting, politics, and subtle relationships of the characters. Through her aural interpretation it is as though George Eliot herself was narrating with a full cast of performers, each with their unique voice, enacting a multitude of personalities. Thank you, Ms Stevenson. I will seek out other books you’ve narrated.

Historia
Eccentric and reclusive, Emily Dickinson wrote poetry that reflects the richness of her interior world and the peculiar beauty of her inner vision. During her lifetime, her poetry was considered too unusual to be publishable, but after her death in 1885, Dickinson achieved posthumous recognition as one of the great poetic voices of the 19th century. This collection, read by Alexandra O'Karma, includes commentary and some of Dickinson's letters as well as 75 of her over 900 poems, including such favorites as "Because I Could Not Stop for Death," "'Hope' Is the Thing with Feathers," "There Is No Frigate like a Book," and "There's a Certain Slant of Light."

"Martha Gellhorn was so fearless in a male way, and yet utterly capable of making men melt," writes New Yorker literary editor Bill Buford. As a journalist, Gellhorn covered every military conflict from the Spanish Civil War to Vietnam and Nicaragua. She also bewitched Eleanor Roosevelt's secret love and enraptured Ernest Hemingway with her courage as they dodged shell fire together.

Dark side of travel
Revisado: 05-04-20
At first the voice of the narrator seems too young for the age from which Martha Gellhorn writes. But after a few hours one becomes a accustomed to the narrator who hits the right note of edginess and humor.
By the end of the book I reconciled her focus on the negative aspects of travel with her opening observation that listeners seem most interested in the dark side, what goes wrong.
