Excellent
Revisado: 03-02-25
A unique voice and a study in human nature lurking behind each action. It’s the modern version of a Brave New World and Lord of the Flies, but more entertaining than either. I a can feel all the moral ambiguity of The Departed brewing and I am anticipating reading the second book with enthusiasm and anxiety. I was on the edge of my seat even when not in the midst of action moments. An excellent read.

Good world building and characters. It’s not as accomplished as the Stormlight archives, which I adored, but is still a good and enjoyable series

Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

intelligent and self aware
Revisado: 10-20-23
The author has done a staggering amount of research, and it shows in his open minded and comprehensive approach to a myriad of subjects. The kind of historical context that we need more of.
It’s very long and intellectual, but I don’t have a problem with that and I didn’t find it dry at all. The writing is very fluid and transitions smoothly and logically from point to point - so skillfully I almost distrust it, since an articulate communicator can be convincing of anything they choose. But I found the huge majority of his points sound and thought provoking.
The narration is great, but people who don’t have an affinity for British accents might find it pretentious.

Historia
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Creative and satisfying
Revisado: 04-11-22
It took me a little while to get into this story, but I’m glad I held out. It’s primarily an epic fantasy for entertainment value, but it also has some good insight in regards to human nature as its foundation. I enjoy and have the patience for books that are long and descriptive, so I was happy with lots of detail and a contemplative pace peppered with frequent exciting moments, as well as the long winding emotional journeys each character has.
I am most impressed with the author’s variety and fully realized characters. The path of each protagonist and their character arc is not straight forward or easy, with many back steps, failures, and unpredictable directions. The author’s ability to world build is also significant, creating a planet that is very different but not annoyingly emphasized. But I might feel this way in part due to the narrators’ even, steady speaking styles. Details of the world are drawn out slowly but naturally, which always pulls me in.
The book and it’s characters can be a bit santimonious and eye rollingly honorable, but seems to have been balanced with enough character flaws that I wasn’t bothered by it, even though I would’ve normally found such a thing cheesy and overdramatic.
I can’t wait to listen to the others

Historia
Lady Chatterley's Lover, written in 1928, tells the story of a passionate love affair between an upper class woman and her husband’s gamekeeper, which was thought to be so shocking in its content and its straightforward use of explicit sexual terms, that it was not officially published until 1960.

A Lackluster slog
Revisado: 09-25-21
I think it’s fair to say that this book is all dependent on context. So what once was a groundbreaking and scandalous piece of literature then, Is really lackluster now without the shock value. I found the characters frustrating and ineffectual, and the narration fine for when reading the female main character, but uninspiring for the male. To be fair, the dialogue doesn’t leave the narrator much to work with.

Historia
How much must one pay for an hour of youthful folly? The Pureblood Registry accused Lucian de Remeni-Masson of "unseemly involvement with ordinaries", which meant only that he spoke with a young woman not of his own kind, allowed her to see his face unmasked, worked a bit of magic for her.... After that one mistake, Lucian’s grandsire excised half his magic and savage Harrowers massacred his family.

One of my favorite books
Revisado: 01-27-20
A wonderful book full of rich characters and an intriguing adventure. Berg’s prose is almost poetic, but flows smoothly and easily enough that it doesn’t distract from the story. I’ve listened to this three times.
The world and settings she creates are full bodied but understated - she doesn’t get lost in the world-creation like many fantasy authors. It’s a pet peeve of mine when only the points significant to the plot are given close attention by the author, thereby making over obvious leads. So I was happy that all moments are richly described enough in their own right to bring life to the scene and keep me guessing where the plot was going, but not annoyingly bogged down with too much unnecessary detail.
The narration is some of the best I’ve heard yet. He takes on many voices to fit age, gender, temperament, and culture without overacting too much. He nailed the personalities in the book and is very consistent. He makes me consider listening to other books just because he’s the narrator.
My only criticism worth mentioning is that it seems to be only a two book series. There is a lot more to be said with this character and enough loose ends I hope the author revisits this in the near future!

Historia
Returning to the territory he so brilliantly explored in his masterful New York Times best seller American Gods, the incomparable Neil Gaiman offers up a work of dazzling ingenuity, a kaleidoscopic journey deep into myth that is at once startling, terrifying, exhilarating, and fiercely funny, a true wonder of a novel that confirms Stephen King's glowing assessment of the author as "a treasure house of story, and we are lucky to have him."

Good, but could have been grittier
Revisado: 05-23-19
A fun, excellently narrated story that digs into the roots of how impactful stories are to human culture. I love the narrator and felt his performance made the book far richer than it would have been if I had read it in paper form. I haven’t read many Neil Gaiman novels, so take what I say with a grain of salt when I suspect this is one of his middle efforts (which still makes it a better than average book). I’m inclined to be of the opinion he is an excellent storyteller, and this book was good, but didn’t knock my socks off. It has depth and purpose that comes out over time, but the characters didn’t grab me as strongly as I would have hoped - while the heroes had good complexity and flaws to bring them to life, they were a little too light, and the villains a little too cartoonish. Gaiman often exposes the darker sides of humanity, which I love, but this story gives it a light nod. All in all a story I would recommend, it just wasn’t the deep, impactful gut punch I was hoping for.
