Historia
Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

Atrocious southern accent attempt but great story
Revisado: 03-25-24
This was an engaging story and a great change of pace from my usual choices, but man oh man, the narrator’s attempt at a Southern accent was cringey at best. It did the writer a great disservice and finding a Southerner to narrate the book would have been so much better. I would have bailed on the book early on, but the story kept me going.

George is losing it.
Revisado: 11-29-23
George G. has been always been one of my fav narrators, but he’s gone downhill on this one. Lack of enunciation on words, muffled and the usual abundance of saliva (which before was more tolerable). I’m guessing the story was solid but I couldn’t get through it. Maybe it’s time to find another performer or perhaps Sir George was sick. Bummer either way.

Historia
Sixteen-year-old John Grady Cole's grandfather has just died, his parents have permanently separated, and the family ranch, upon which he had placed so many boyish hopes, has been sold. Rootless and increasingly restive, Cole leaves Texas, accompanied by his friend Lacey Rawlins, and begins a journey across the vaquero frontier into the badlands of northern Mexico.

Awful Southern accent. Amazing Book
Revisado: 11-09-22
With a book of this quality, how in the world could the effort not have been made to choose a narrator that even if not a Southerner or Texan, at least could come close to nailing the accent.
The nuance of language and regional diction that shines through at genius level in C.M.’s books (even through print) has been brutalized by this narrator. Don’t believe me? Ask any Southerner (or Texan) to listen to the dialogue and to tell you what they think. It’s just awful.
Matt Damon even did a better job in the watered down movie version of the story and he’s from Massachusetts.
I’m surprised they got this by McCarthy.
If producers and directors knew how many listeners (or viewers) cringed at their poor casting in roles that include a Southern accent, they’d do better. Because we do indeed cringe. Every time.
