Historia
It's 1811, and the threat of revolution haunts the upper classes of King George III's England. Then a beautiful young woman is found savagely murdered on the altar steps of an ancient church near Westminster Abbey. A dueling pistol found at the scene and the damning testimony of a witness both point to one man - Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, a brilliant young nobleman shattered by his experience in the Napoleonic Wars.

Formulaic
Revisado: 03-21-25
This is a ho-hum story and narration. The plot is formulaic and the characters underdeveloped. The narrator should have been a man as the main character and most of the conversation was between men. This narrator was not convincing.

Historia
Brunhild was a foreign princess, raised to be married off for the sake of alliance-building. Her sister-in-law Fredegund started out as a lowly palace slave. And yet - in sixth-century Merovingian France, where women were excluded from noble succession and royal politics was a blood sport - these two iron-willed strategists reigned over vast realms, changing the face of Europe.

Astounding reveal of history I knew nothing about
Revisado: 01-27-25
This remarkably detailed and rich narrative of the contested reigns of two Merevingian queens fascinated and awed me, so alive did they seem. I highly recommend this book.

Historia
Magdalene la Batarde is the madam of the Old Priory Guesthouse in Southwark. She and her women are expected to engage in a number of sinful activities, but bloody murder isn't one of them until Baldassare, the messenger, dies. Though Baldassare isn't a regular client of the Old Priory Guesthouse, Magdalene and her women refuse to allow his death to go unavenged. Of course, their efforts aren't completely altruistic.

The plot and characters seemed interesting in the advertisement, but in actuality, were not. I especially disliked the misogynistic men.

Repetitive
Revisado: 10-30-24
This story does have some good action and an interesting murder, but mainly it’s about getting over traumatic experiences. The frequent reminiscing about these experiences and the constant reassurance is about how it’s OK to feel as you do got repetitive.

Very enjoyable
Revisado: 09-24-24
This story and performance are just right for a pleasurable experience. The characters are likable, the villain appropriately, despicable, and the storyline predictable enough to not be stressful. This would make a good Disney movie.

Got bogged down in sentimentality
Revisado: 09-20-24
The characters as youths were interesting, and the storyline progressed. The characters as adults seemed less mature than the adult got bogged down in their insecurity and inadequacies, and we’re boring and repetitious.

Historia
The Academy of Chaenbalu has stood against magic for centuries. Hidden from the world, acting from the shadows, it trains its students to detect and retrieve magic artifacts, which it jealously guards from the misuse of others. Because magic is dangerous: Something that heals can also harm, and a power that aids one person may destroy another. Of the academy’s many students, only the most skilled can become Avatars - warrior thieves, capable of infiltrating the most heavily guarded vaults - and only the most determined can be trusted to resist the lure of magic.

Fragmented and overly detailed fight scenes
Revisado: 07-26-24
I enjoyed the first half of this story. The premise was interesting, as was the character development. The second half was overwhelmed with gratuitous fight scenes that did not advance the story. I flipped through them to find the story again. The narrator was very good.

But as an unlicensed magic user, her gift is a crime. Commissioned by an underground group known as the Cowls, Elsie uses her spellbreaking to push back against the aristocrats and help the common man. Elite magic user Bacchus Kelsey is one elusive spell away from his mastership when he catches Elsie breaking an enchantment. To protect her secret, Elsie strikes a bargain.

Entertaining story
Revisado: 06-23-23
Spellbreaker is an entertaining story with likable characters. The female narrator is very good. The male narrator is peculiar. His voices are like caricatures of the characters. He was off-putting at the start, but I got used to him. I recommend this story for a fun read.

Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

Remarkable!
Revisado: 04-08-23
The fictional story, combined with the scholarly detail, crisp writing, and excellent narration, made this book a delight to experience. The questions it posed, regarding the interplay of words, history, and culture, left me thinking.

Tedious
Revisado: 03-17-23
There were good elements, some creative ideas, but the characters just didn’t develop into anyone I cared about. The main characters were people floundering in their problems and were very slow to make progress. The same thoughts, feelings, and words seemed to be repeated over and over unnecessarily. No one ever seemed to be in a hurry, even in the midst of battle. The narrator may have enhanced this. She was very good with individual characters voices, but her narration was too evenly modulated with little variation in intensity or intonation.
