Alvin woke in a room that was not his, to discover that he had died and his brain had been bargained off cheaply to pay off someone else’s debt. It did not sit well with him. It didn’t surprise him that even in death, people were still using him for their own purposes. He had never exactly been a good guy, but everyone had their breaking point, and he had found his. The bastards in charge had uploaded his mind into a virtual death game. The whole world could now pay to see him play it and probably die. Regardless, he was not about to wait for death to come for him.

Decent zombie litrpg that quickly became mediocre porn

I like the initial concept and execution. Once the MC started hooking up with a teenager and it became more than 50% of the story it became a slog to get through. Dialogue is pretty stilted, written like the author probably knows the difference between a tribly and a fedora.

Fun anti hero story
Revisado: 07-16-24
Well done, easy read. The narrator did an excellent job with a wide cast of voices and the story itself was entertaining. At times it suffered from action movie logic but that's kind of the point of a story like this. I could easily see a summer blockbuster coming out of this one

An interesting far future adventure
Revisado: 06-01-21
I enjoyed this book. It's hard to discuss it without too many spoilers, but I'll do by best. Most of the story was fairly believable and relied on some established tropes of the genre. It was well executed and the performance was great. When the story takes a turn it loses some credibility, primarily because the characters seem to possess knowledge that they couldn't otherwise. How does a person who grew up on a spaceship understand where the sun will rise? Especially when the "Teacher" computer hasn't been functioning for generations? This is the sort of knowledge that would be lost without a reference point.
Overall a good read that I recommend. Given the direction the book takes at the end, any followups would be vastly different types of stories than this one.

When celebrated Omicron detective Ferrix Vaughn is called in to investigate a deadly breach on Hesperidia, a protected planet full of indigenous wildlife, he doesn't know what to expect. The place used to be a tourist attraction, but the safari tours were discontinued long ago due to rampant poaching. The deeper Vaughn digs, the more the evidence seems to point to a recent raid on a biotech facility in a nearby system. Whatever was stolen from there, it's attracted the attention of major political players in a time of war across the colonies.

Feels like a side story without the main story
Revisado: 06-01-21
I enjoyed this book. Let me start off with that. But reading it, I was left with the feeling that this story took place with characters, locations and concepts that had already been established in another series. I looked up the author fully expecting there to be a wider universe available that I would come at sideways through this book, but that wasn't the case. This doesn't take away from the fact that the book was well written, engaging and interesting. The dialogue was pretty tight and the story itself was fun. I think it could have benefited from more world building to bulk out the 6.5 hours of its length. A 10 hour book might have worked better for this. I'll keep the author on my watchlist for more.

Something different, a LitRTS
Revisado: 05-04-21
The LitRPG genre is pretty ubiquitous, so it was only a matter of time before a LitRTS came about. What's next, a Lit4x? God I hope so.
An RTS as a story is a much more difficult proposition than an RPG, given the lack of a central perspective. Using the trope of an alien force recruiting humans for our martial prowess (using video games as a screening tool) the story quickly moves into build order, micro and macro strategy and base management.
The story never really does anything unexpected, but it was easy to listen to and fun for an RTS fan. The narrator did an excellent job with the story, although he may have played the protagonist as a little too much of a jerk.

Vainqueur Knightsbane is your average dragon: A giant, fire-breathing lizard who loves to take naps on his golden hoard, kidnap princesses for fun, and make the life of adventurers miserable. Vainqueur's only pleasure in life is to watch his treasure get bigger, one coin at a time. So when a would-be thief turned unwilling minion tells him about "classes", "levels", and "quests", Vainqueur wonders if maybe, just maybe, he should consider a career change. After all, why bother hunting monsters for free when you can get paid for it?

The best kind of satire
Revisado: 06-16-20
The best satires are the ones that are effective as examples of the genre they satirize. Vainquer the Dragon passes this test for quality satire. It functions as a solid fantasy story on its own, while also operating as a satisfyingly crunchy litrpg. It has multidimensional characters, plenty of laughs and a good narrative arc. In addition it pokes gentle fun at both genres, both trotting out and subverting standard tropes. I enjoyed the book enough to want a sequel and to look up the other works of the author. Definitely worth reading.

Entertaining and light read
Revisado: 02-11-20
I received a review copy of this book and wasn't provided any additional compensation.
That being said, this book was easy to listen to. I didn't have to give it a lot of focus. It's a pretty standard LitRPG romp with the twist of centuries having passed since the characters joined their online world. The new angle of exhaustion with a forever after was interesting, and the RP1 style obsession with 80s gaming nostalgia kept it interesting.
The narrator did a great job, there were scattered (appropriate) sound effects, and overall I would recommend.

Fun YA magical detective story
Revisado: 08-20-19
I enjoyed this book, but I think my teenage self would have enjoyed it more. I'm reviewing it based on that teenage version of me who hasn't encountered so many tropes or been exposed to so many multidimensiomal, complex characters.
A Jaime Lannister would have been out of place in this book. It's an excellent book for young adults. It's light, fun, fairly quick, and touches on some more adult themes of discrimination and Greed.
This is a book I'll have my oldest kid listen to in a few years.
This book was provided to me at no cost to review. The review itself was not influenced by this.

A good followup to the first with few surprises
Revisado: 10-08-17
This book continued along the trajectory of the first, with the same pacing issues and loose plot. It was still a highly entertaining read... sort of a cyberthriller lite? The narrator did an excellent job and the story was easy to follow.
Once again the sex scenes, although coming later in this book than the last one, were intensely descriptive and thorough. Not any source of disturbance personally but in a narrative of this type that sort of detail seems very out of place. Like the puppet lovemaking scene in Team America: World Police. Just way too detailed.
The story itself was good although predictable and a little plodding. You realized about a quarter of the way through the book how things were going to play out and got very few surprises along the way.
All in all I would recommend this to those who enjoyed the first book and who are looking for an easy listening modern hacking adventure/thriller.

This is not a comprehensive guide from start to finish on writing your first novel. What this book contains is sources of inspiration, ideas for generating stories, ways to commit to the writing process, tips for editing and publishing, and lots of other great information.
If you're expecting a step by step checklist then you might be disappointed, but if you're looking for inspiration to get started writing and help on how to do so this might be the one that pushes you into putting pen to paper.
