Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Slow burn but a wonderful story
Revisado: 10-29-24
Once I stopped trying to really remember all of the details (the “calendar” for example) and just listened and let the story roll through me I really enjoyed this imaginative tale.
The narration was supurb. I will probably listen to it once or more again sometime.
The ending was very satisfying and left me thinking about it for days afterwards

I tried- just couldn’t finish- Pre-teen YA
Revisado: 10-07-24
The main character is extremely pre-teen and super self-
Absorbed- made even more obnoxious by the narration (constant whining).
I was curious about the overall story- couldn’t make it to the end of (what I suspect is) the first book (all 3 are in one compilation)

Tried to like it- but characters were shallow and overall unlikable. Maybe that was the point. Listened to the end hoping for some great reveal. Overall Meh

Historia
In South Africa, the future looks promising. Personal robots are making life easier for the working class. The government is harnessing renewable energy to provide infrastructure for the poor. And in the bustling coastal town of Port Elizabeth, the economy is booming thanks to the genetic engineering industry that has found a welcome home there. Yes, the days to come are looking very good for South Africans. That is, if they can survive the present challenges.

Really really wanted to like it
Revisado: 02-11-24
It never became a story I could get in to. There were interesting characters with intermittent interesting stories.
However the narratives that were most important were strained and overall the story was forced.
I kept trying to enjoy it and find merit- but was sorely disappointed in the end

Historia
A reckoning with the persistence of evil in post-Civil War Atlanta. After leaving Atlanta in disgrace three years before, detective Thomas Canby is called back to the city on the eve of Atlanta's 1881 International Cotton Exposition to partner with Atlanta's first African American police officer, Cyrus Underwood. The case they're assigned is chilling: a serial murderer who seems to be violently targeting Atlanta's wealthiest black entrepreneurs. The killer's method is both strange and unusually gruesome.

Just not good
Revisado: 01-10-24
I started this book a dozen times and couldn’t get into it. Finally decided to push through bc I couldn’t return it any more. The characters were hollow and I was not invested in any of them. I understand the historical part was supposed to be integral to the story- but it just dragged on. And then the end was like a shift into a completely different book.
It had such great reviews I held out to the end- but was overall disappointed

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.
