Not That Sweet is a raw and courageous exploration of navigating life as the "black sheep." The author’s vulnerability shines through as she unpacks complex topics like family dynamics, self-worth and reclaiming her voice. This book invites readers to reflect on their own paths toward self-love and authenticity. I think this book would be especially of interest for anyone who felt like they were made an outcast by their own parents as a child, or if they were ever pitted against their siblings.

While the narrative was powerful, I found the timeline a bit disjointed at times. I was left curious about her current relationship with her parents and siblings and whether the past issues were ever addressed.

Despite these minor critiques, Stephanie’s honesty and strength are inspiring. 💜

Early in the book it seemed that Jill was stating facts and devoid of stating an opinion /not sharing her own feelings on things. I wanted to hear more about her personal emotions. That comes out later in the book. I think that’s part of the overall story in that IBLP principles teach children to fall in line and obey their parents, rejecting the idea of the kids even becoming aware of their own opinions.

I watched the show growing up and I had a sense that there was deep control going on behind the “polite smiles.” Jill’s bravery in sharing her experience has validated what many of us suspected, there was a lot of control pulling the strings behind the polite smiles.

Jill is brave for finding her own way and sharing her story this way. I’m happy for her and her family that it seems they have found a space in which they can connect while also honoring their own choices for their own lives.
Her story demonstrates the ways in which It’s possible to hold both: love gratitude, and respect for who your parents are, while also recognizing hurts and how you have been traumatized and impacted by their decisions. I think she’s shared her story honestly while also honoring her parents. While my belief system differs greatly from most of the Dugger family, I think this is something that all families strive for: finding a way to be one’s true self, while also belonging within a loving and accepting family, even if your ways of life are different.
