A unique insight into life in Roman Britain. Downie writes with humor and intrigue. Her characters are all so much fun to follow and perfectly portrayed with Vance’s narration. Everything is best of the best!

Historia
Just six years old when my brother was snatched off the street, I grew up in the aftermath of tragedy. While other kids were happily playing in the sandbox, I was hiding under press conference podiums listening to my parents beg for Jake’s safe return. People ask if I’m screwed up after what happened, and I never know how to respond.

Touched me through and through
Revisado: 05-21-23
This is the first book I’ve read by Kelton but will not be my last. Fascinating and heart wrenching. As always, Guidall’s narration brought life to the characters so much so I feel like I knew them personally. That is also a testament to Kelton’s writing which flows so smoothly and comfortably. I did not know about these hardships in our countries history.

Female narration is annoying and distracting
Revisado: 08-01-22
Sweet story but the predictable, nasal and repetitive cadence of the female narrator drained Ophelia’s personality. I would have preferred just the male narration of the whole story.

Historia
They were the Princess Dianas of their day—perhaps the most photographed and talked about young royals of the early twentieth century. The four captivating Russian Grand Duchesses—Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia Romanov—were much admired for their happy dispositions, their looks, the clothes they wore and their privileged lifestyle. Over the years, the story of the four Romanov sisters and their tragic end in a basement at Ekaterinburg in 1918 has clouded our view of them, leading to a mass of sentimental and idealized hagiography.

Fascinating and fully researched
Revisado: 10-07-21
Rappaport really painted a clear picture of the Romanov’s tragic lives. If Sands would have narrated as she did in the epilogue I would have given her 5 stars too but her narration in the rest of the book was so overly affected and sappy it was distracting.

Not recommended
Revisado: 09-10-21
The narration was overly affected and sugary sweet. And as for the writing, the characters had no depth and I the reasons for their motivations were weak or unclear. All in all it was very disappointing.

not my fave
Revisado: 06-04-21
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Cake series but I think this novella should have been skipped. Maybe if the narration was better I would have felt differently. It sounded like the Little Mermaid was reading for the female characters - terrible. The guy wasn't so bad but it didnt work having him read multiple characters. The epilogue was expected and trite. I like her full books are so much better, where the stories build and the characters develop.
