Historia
O Jerusalem! is the epic drama of 1948, when Arabs and Jews fought for control of the city of Jerusalem. This story traverses centuries and continents, covering the time between WWII and the creation of the independent state of Israel. Based on five years of intensive research and thousands of interviews, this is a story of courage, terrorism, heroism, and ultimately, war.

A well-written book enhanced by outstanding narration. History told like a thriller.
Revisado: 03-16-20
The modern history of Jerusalem as it is tragically fought over by parties all of whom are convinced they have a rightful claim to the eternal city.
The book is a commendable effort by the authors to present a balanced story, though in the end it is not difficult to guess where their sympathies lie.
After I finished listening to the book I started looking for more books narrated by Bikel, then, having found nothing I was likely to enjoy as much as O Jerusalem, I went on to try and find other books by the same authors. In that order!

In AI Superpowers, Kai-fu Lee argues powerfully that because of these unprecedented developments in AI, dramatic changes will be happening much sooner than many of us expected. Indeed, as the US-Sino AI competition begins to heat up, Lee urges the US and China to both accept and to embrace the great responsibilities that come with significant technological power.

Slow start for me. But ultimately so worth it!
Revisado: 07-28-19
A very deep and insightful account of the present and an informed guess at future scenarios. Kai-Fu Lee is both engaging and engaged and leaves our governments and thought leaders with weighty issues to ponder. 5 stars.

Historia
Power struggles have a constant presence in Martin Sixsmith's story of Russia. Collected here in 50 episodes, he chronicles the Mongol hordes invading in the 13th century, through the iron autocratic fists of successive tsars, to the fall of the Soviet Union and Russia's re-emergence as a superpower. Sixsmith brings his first-hand experience of reporting from Russia in the 1980s and 90s to his narrative, witnessing the critical moment when the Soviet Union lost its grip on power.

Historia
The Austro-Hungarian army that marched east and south to confront the Russians and Serbs in the opening campaigns of World War I had a glorious past but a pitiful present. Speaking a mystifying array of languages and lugging outdated weapons, the Austrian troops were hopelessly unprepared for the industrialized warfare that would shortly consume Europe.

This sprawling and often brutal novel, set in the rich farmlands of California's Salinas Valley, follows the intertwined destinies of two families - the Trasks and the Hamiltons - whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

Big Letdown
Revisado: 09-30-14
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
If you believe that John Steinbeck can do no wrong this book might be for you.
What was most disappointing about John Steinbeck’s story?
A gallery of unidimensional characters, the story of Cain and Abel repeated ad nauseam... The most disturbing is the underlying and often naked racism: Lee, in the end and despite his intelligence and ambition, could never escape the destiny of one born into a class of servants. Then, of course, the N word, repeatedly, to refer, I can only surmise, to an African-American who had dared to run a bordello, seemingly with success.
I was disappointed because I had been so impressed with John Steinbeck's other book, The Grapes of Wrath. I find it hard to believe both books would have been written by the same person!
What does Richard Poe bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Well, it must be Richard Poe's doing that I managed to listen to the whole book, to the bitter end.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
At times the story looked as though it might take off. Only looked, never did.
Any additional comments?
The book should come with a warning: If you enjoyed The Grapes of Wrath and wish to keep John Steinbeck on his pedestal, avoid this book!

Nothing short of amazing
Revisado: 11-27-12
What made the experience of listening to The Devotion of Suspect X the most enjoyable?
The main protagonists are deep, multidimensional and well defined. The book is simply a masterpiece, and too tough if I sound melodramatic.
What did you like best about this story?
There is no complacency in the story line. Intense all the way to the end.
What about David Pittu’s performance did you like?
Very good indeed.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Expect the unexpected
Any additional comments?
Strangely enough I am shying away from the other offering by the author lest I be disappointed. Can't imagine the Devotion of Suspect X being bested!
