I see why this book is studied, but I don't think it should be.
Revisado: 01-05-24
I'll admit the writing is well-done. The characters are believable, the plot moves forward at a steady pace, and there's a lot of symbolic imagery that makes it easy for me to see why literature teachers and critics have returned to it for so many years. However, I know that the premise is outdated, not to mention unsupported by actual data. And the further I got into the story, the more disgusted I became - not just by the murders and hunting, but also by the very idea that "savagery" (a term which carries with it many implications, particularly racist ones) is part of human nature. The idea that we need law and order to prevent ourselves from becoming murderers is simply inaccurate, and ignores the multitude of complicating factors that a group likes this crowd of children has to deal with. These children are traumatized in some MAJOR ways, and they don't have the ability to deal with that trauma appropriately because they're alone and their brains aren't developed to the point of being able to course-correct. Not to mention that Jack is clearly angling for power from the outset, and comes across as a bully the moment we first meet him. He capitalizes on fear and lack of knowledge to manipulate the others because prior to the plane crash, he had already *learned* that behaving that way would get him what he wanted. His descent into murderousness isn't caused by innate human nature; it's caused by the fact that he's learned meanness, and the more afraid he becomes, the more he seeks control through cruelty and totalitarianism.

Historia
Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes, she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: Due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in.

Exceptional story and delivery
Revisado: 05-27-22
This is my FAVORITE type of love story - not focused only on the romance, but placing emphasis on friendship, familial love, self-love, and work passion as well. Loved the honest discussion of mental health issues, as well as what it can be like to live as a woman of color in North America. Phillipa Soo's performance is wonderful, and her voice combined with the writing in such an evocative way that I found myself speaking back to Gracie as if she were sitting next to me. 10/10 would recommend

Historia
In a quiet suburb of New Delhi, two next-door neighbors develop a friendship: one, a young woman engaged to be married, and the other, Nadine: a woman in her 60s living with her second husband. We follow these two women through their phone calls and visits together, diving deeper into Nadine's storied past: With her larger-than-life personality and proclivity to defy society's conventions, her insight weighs heavily on her young friend, about to face a major turning point of her own.

Historia
Today's feminist movement has a glaring blind spot, and paradoxically, it is women. Mainstream feminists rarely talk about meeting basic needs as a feminist issue, argues Mikki Kendall, but food insecurity, access to quality education, safe neighborhoods, a living wage, and medical care are all feminist issues. All too often, however, the focus is not on basic survival for the many, but on increasing privilege for the few. Author Mikki Kendall takes aim at the legitimacy of the modern feminist movement arguing that it has chronically failed to address the needs of all but a few women.

Every feminist needs to read this.

Painful, but accurate. I can't imagine a more in-depth discussion of how feminism needs to improve, and if you believe yourself to be a feminist, PLEASE read or listen to this book. Personally, I'd recommend listening; there's a lot of truth and emotion that comes out more profoundly because Mikki Kendall narrated it herself.

I love the plot, and the performance is phenomenal - with impeccable character voices - but sometimes the chronology can be hard to follow while just listening. I would have enjoyed the benefit of a physical book to flip back through whenever I got confused.
