Historia
High school wasn’t a grand time for everyone, but when a group of friends decide to meet up at a B and B ahead of their 10-year reunion, old grudges resurface, and one of them ends up dead. Now the owners, a kindly older couple, are on the hook for the accidental death due to anaphylaxis, but they insist no mistakes were made on their part. Fortune is asked to look into the situation before the inept local sheriff railroads the couple or simply allows gossip to run them out of business, which will cost them their home. Swamp Team 3 heads to Voodoo Island to find a way to clear the couple.

a sad story
Revisado: 12-18-24
This series used to be quite good. I always looked forward to the next audio. However, the last book and this one have gone down the chick lit hill so this will have been the last I've read of Fortune Redding. She's jumped the alligator, for sure.

Ten years ago, Ryan Comeaux was convicted of killing his girlfriend and was sentenced to life in prison. Now a witness has come forward who claims she was with Ryan the entire night and it’s not possible that he was the killer. But the local police assume she’s mistaken and aren’t interested in reopening what they view as an open-and-shut case. The witness, Kelsey Spalding, has her own reasons for wanting Ryan’s conviction overturned and hires Swamp Team 3 to prove him innocent.

What a shame
Revisado: 08-29-24
The Miss Fortune stories have been a somewhat fluffy joy over the past several years. Unfortunately, the formerly light adventure/comedy/mystery series is veering dangerously close to soap opera/mystery. Even the funny bits are not so funny anymore, seeming quite strained. Let's hope things perk up in the next volume.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Historia
Medical doctor and broadcaster Chris van Tulleken has spent his career trying to reframe the conversation around eating right, balancing the hard (and sometimes shocking) facts about what we're putting into our bodies with empathy for the natural desire to keep eating what we like, have time for, and can afford. As he argues in this book, we are all participants in an experiment we didn't consent to, one to determine how to get us to buy as much ultra-processed food as possible.

The story of ultra-processed food and why it is so troubling. Some dubious theories and politics on other topics but just concentrate on the main subject and you will learn a lot.

In the dark waiting room of the ferry terminal in the sketchy Spanish port of Algeciras, two aging Irishmen - Maurice Hearne and Charlie Redmond, longtime partners in the lucrative and dangerous enterprise of smuggling drugs - sit at night, none too patiently. It is October 23, 2018, and they are expecting Maurice's estranged daughter, Dilly, to either arrive on a boat coming from Tangier or depart on one heading there. This nocturnal vigil will initiate an extraordinary journey back in time to excavate their shared history of violence, romance, mutual betrayals, and serial exiles.

Stunning performance!
Revisado: 02-16-21
This book won't leave you.
Wonderful. Heartbreaking, Humorous. Poetic. Bleak. Hopeful. Kevin Barry's reading of his own book is dramatic but not overdone. It's the best author-read recording I've ever listened to, right up there with Dylan Thomas' A Child's Christmas in Wales.

Historia
It was a day like any other day for Marina Trahan...until she caught her husband in bed with another woman. Before that eye-opening wake-up call, Marina would have described her life as average or uneventful, maybe even boring. But now, chaos and confusion reign supreme. She’d expected to slide through midlife with her unwanted extra pounds, chin hair, and hot flashes and move somewhat gracefully into elastic-waist pants and having no verbal filter.

Not Jana's best effort
Revisado: 01-03-21
Paranormal stories are not my cup of tea but I love Jana's work, overall, so decided to give this a read. Well, it wasn't great, not horrible, but truly ruined by the narration. The accent sounded just wrong and the different characters voices didn't seem very consistent. For great listening, try the Miss Fortune or the Shay Archer series. Both are terrific!

Historia
Patricia Campbell's life has never felt smaller. Her ambitious husband is too busy to give her a goodbye kiss in the morning, her kids have their own lives, her senile mother-in-law needs constant care, and she's always a step behind on thank-you notes and her endless list of chores. The one thing she has to look forward to is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women united by their love of true crime and paperback fiction. At these meetings they're as likely to talk about the Manson family as they are marriage, motherhood, and neighborhood gossip.

A dud
Revisado: 11-07-20
You'd expect a book with this title to be scary, right? It sure has the occasional gory scene but no real supernatural/vampire chops.
Some reviewers have complained that the book trivializes women's lives but I saw the depictions as social satire.
I loved that the villain's name was James Harris, which I took as homage to Shirley Jackson.
