Historia
In the heart of Adenashire, where elfish enchantments and dwarven delights rule, Arleta Starstone, a human confectionist works twice as hard perfecting her unique blend of baking and apothecary herbs. So when an orc neighbor secretly enters her creations into the prestigious Elven Baking Battle, Arleta faces a dilemma. Being magicless, her participation in the competition could draw more scowls than smiles. And if Arleta wants to prove her talent and establish her culinary reputation, this human will need more than just her pastry craft to sweeten the odds.

oh the never ending WHINING!
Revisado: 03-27-25
All the whining and self centered cowardly bs is just DRAINING! The FMC never stops whining, she's insanely self centered and just a bad friend, and yet everyone *loves* her. She's rude and careless and I regret the time I took to read it! The BAKING portion was never a focus and it's barely a plot point (mainly because it never strays from the 'poor pitiful me' whines of the FMC).

Shari Franke’s childhood was a constant battle for survival. Her mother, Ruby Franke, enforced a severe moral code while maintaining a façade of a picture-perfect family for their wildly popular YouTube channel 8 Passengers, which documented the day-to-day life of raising six children for a staggering 2.5 million subscribers. But a darker truth lurked beneath the surface—Ruby’s wholesome online persona masked a more tyrannical parenting style than anyone could have imagined.

this book was beautiful and heartbreaking. I cried and I appreciate how carefully and mindfully the author wrote this and how brave she was to share her story.

Historia
Sixteen hundred years ago Britain left the Roman Empire and swiftly fell into ruin. Grand cities and luxurious villas were deserted and left to crumble, and civil society collapsed into chaos. Into this violent and unstable world came foreign invaders from across the sea, and established themselves as its new masters. The Anglo-Saxons traces the turbulent history of these people across the next six centuries. It explains how their earliest rulers fought relentlessly against each other for glory and supremacy, and then were almost destroyed by the onslaught of the vikings.

approachable and interesting
Revisado: 03-14-25
Very approachable book for people interested in this time period. I felt like the last 2 chapters were a little rushed and jumbled, but over all I enjoyed this book and I found the way the author chose to focus on certain key aspects of the time period to tell the history was fresh and helped me stay focused. it felt as though the narrator spoke softly at random times i often had to turn up the volume randomly.

oh the LISTS
Revisado: 02-25-25
It felt like a lot of this book was copy and paste over and over again. He was clearly covering his butt, however it became tedious. The information was overall good, and he was very clear in his recommendations, which was appropriate. But this felt as though he was identifying key words, telling brief synopses of stories then moving on.

booooring
Revisado: 02-19-25
Eh, the writing isn't awful. But the characters are dull, it kept seeming like they would grow and develop, then they'd do something stupid. I personally get bored with books in which I keep having to internally yell at the main characters to stop being stupid. The author tried initially to mimic Austens style, and didn't do a bad job. The one thing i enjoyed was that the romance was subtle enough in the beginning to make it interesting by the middle end.

Henrietta Doryn has never enjoyed fighting. She'd rather be in the kitchen baking cookies. But it's her duty as Warrior Princess to face off against the forces of evil. As such, she's unceremoniously shooed from her kingdom to go eliminate the all-powerful Dark Lord next door. Keith Monfort has never enjoyed ruling with an iron fist. He'd prefer to be in his workroom tinkering with practical magic. But it's his duty to lead the Dark Enchanted Forest and the forces of evil. So when Henrietta shows up at his door, he's only too happy to invite her in for tea to talk it out instead.

disjointed and jarring
Revisado: 02-12-25
Eh, my main issue of this book is that the chapters were very short and since they were from different perspectives in different areas of the story (the characters were often separated) it felt disjointed and it was hard to get into. The narrators were also very VERY different in their interpretation of the characters and that was startling and made it difficult to follow. Also the narrators would often loudly speak and then whisper different lines rapidly which made it often difficult to understand.
The actual book wasn't bad and the characters were likeable. I felt like it was a bit of a "they met, they're perfect together BOOM". But I will say i much preferred the second part, it was more seamless and seemed less rushed.

maybe it's just me, but this felt like so many "live laugh love" sayings rolled into a book. I feel like he kept it a bit too on the surface and i would have enjoyed him digging into things more. but there were some good reflective snippets in here.

The lives of Leonardo da Vinci, Henry VIII, and Queen Victoria fill bookshelves and fascinate scholars all over the world. But little attention is given to the ferret who posed for the Renaissance master, the servant who oversaw the Tudor’s toilet time, or the famous horse who thrilled the miserable old monarch. These supporting cast members have been waiting in the wings for too long, and Adrian Bliss thinks it’s high time they join their glory-hogging contemporaries in the spotlight. Fortunately, now they can.

I enjoyed the nuance
Revisado: 11-13-24
This was a fun book that definitely highlighted nuances in history and i enjoyed a lot of this book. I will say it made me cry and there were parts that I felt needed a trigger warning, mainly for animal death. But it could just be me.
