Background stories - then, finally, the story
Revisado: 05-07-23
Backgrounds for most characters have been mysteries until now... in fact, most of the book is about the characters individually visiting their homes - a bit disappointing when they finally get together again for the "real" adventure after mini-adventures, and you see that there are only a few hours left in the book! But in the long run, turns out that the background stories needed to be told, and some in particular tie in to the finale (which seems too short, so I guess we'll have to wait for the next book). Overall, it feels like an important transition to the next several books.

Historia
They are outcasts. Hal, Stig, and the others - they are the boys the others want no part of. Skandians, as any reader of Ranger's Apprentice could tell you, are known for their size and strength. Not these boys. Yet that doesn't mean they don't have skills. And courage - which they will need every ounce of to do battle at sea against the other bands, the Wolves and the Sharks, in the ultimate race. The icy waters make for a treacherous playing field - especially when not everyone thinks of it as playing.

Good narration, overall good story
Revisado: 12-07-22
I listened to this with my 10 yo son in mind. Below are my observations.
Narrator: I enjoy listening to John Keating. His pace, interpretation, and expression are good. He doesn't do as many "voices" as some narrators, but it does not negatively impact the listening experience.
Story: there is no profanity (except for characters occasionally swearing by their gods, which doesn't really count). Also no suggestive material. Definitely clean enough for kids, if they are mature enough for battle themes and death.
The story does begin at a somewhat slow pace, perhaps a bit too detailed/wordy for children to "get into". Once several chapters in, the storyline moves along better.
While overall it's a good story and the "bully" gets what he deserves, I was disappointed at the lack of integrity in the main character, resulting in a missed opportunity for positive messages. Advised that "cheating" isn't cheating if not caught, he does just that. Not really a message I want for my kids.
