Historia
Newlyweds Sam Statler and Annie Potter are head over heels, and excited to say good-bye to New York city and start a life together in Sam's sleepy hometown upstate. Or, it turns out, a life where Annie spends most of her time alone while Sam, her therapist husband, works long hours in his downstairs office, tending to the egos of his (mostly female) clientele. Little does Sam know that through a vent in his ceiling, every word of his sessions can be heard from the room upstairs.

Female narrator insufferable

The quivering old lady voice, regardless its purpose to the story, was like nails on a chalkboard for me. A narrator can make or break a book; this is probably one of those ones I should have read rather than listen.

These are the only rules for Jules Larsen’s new job as an apartment sitter at the Bartholomew, one of Manhattan's most high-profile and mysterious buildings. As she gets to know the residents and staff of the Bartholomew, Jules finds herself drawn to fellow apartment sitter Ingrid. When Ingrid confides that the Bartholomew is not what it seems, Jules brushes it off as a harmless ghost story...until the next day, when Ingrid disappears.

The narrator was more dramatic than a first year theater arts major, making the protagonist so annoying, I was rooting against her. Take the narration aside, the protagonist was an airhead. Just straight up ridiculous. Easily my least favorite of McFadden’s books.

Narrator does not fit
Revisado: 02-09-20
I haven’t finished this book yet but so far my biggest criticism is the main character in this book is suppose to be in her early 20s, yet the narrator’s voice is clearly that of an older woman so while this is suppose to be the story of a 20 something seeking revenge for her family as told by a 20 something, it very much comes off like the inner thoughts and mechanisms of a 40 something year old spinster who sounds like a possible chain smoker, and has at least 2 failed marriages under her belt and pretty much given up on life. Just an odd fit...

Another lame & cheesy love story from Gardner
Revisado: 01-27-20
I don’t know if someone is getting paid to write these 5 star reviews but don’t bother, unless you like stores that make soap operas look realistic. Between this and The Perfect Husband, I’m so disappointed in Gardner there’s a good chance I might never read another book of hers again.

WARNING- THIS IS A STRAIGHT UP ROMANCE NOVEL
Revisado: 01-27-20
If you are looking for a suspenseful thriller this book is not for you- the ridiculous sex scenes alone teeter on soft porn. The entire story is ridiculous, the characters are all so histrionic, to the point you’re rooting for the bad guy. Let me give you an example- the protagonist’s daughter has been kidnapped and they are waiting in a hotel room, trying to trick the bad guy into coming for her so she could save her daughter, obviously a tense situation but rather than stay on alert, what does she do? She decides that is the best time to “make love” to the hero of the book. So ridiculous and so cheesy. I use to like Gardner but after this, she’s definitely out of my wishlist. Audible, you need to define your genres better- this is nothing more than some cheesy love book.

FBI special agent Zoe Spencer uses skeletal remains to recreate the faces of murder victims through sculpture. Though highly scientific, the process is also sensitive and intimate; she becomes attached to the individuals she identifies, desperate to find justice for each. As Zoe examines old remains, she sees a teenage girl looking back at her - the victim in a cold case from over a decade ago.

This was so bad, I don’t even know where to start...
Revisado: 01-20-20
Let’s start with the narrator- she legitimately made half the characters in the book sound like they were trying to seduce one another, rather than solve a crime.
The characters- so weak, very little development. Every one of them came off as manufactured and generic, as if the author was taking her direction for a “fictional writing for dummies” book.
Story- oh my god, sooooooo bad. Sooooo cheesy, soooo predictable. Difficult to stay with the story given how generic all the characters were. You really don’t even give a crap who did it by the end of the novel because you can barely remember which character is which. Also, the ridiculous “love making” scenes with the 2 protagonists (if you can really even refer to either as such) were so disgustingly cheesy and sappy, I honestly believe this should have been listed in the romance genre.
Lastly, for the record, Ms. Burton- FBI sketch artists don’t double as federal homicide investigators working an active investigation. Seriously, so bad...lol

To anyone who reads this- if you find the author/narrator’s voice insufferably fast, give it a try on .75 speed; still annoying but tolerable enough to finish the book.
