I’m a long time fan. This book is a hilarious and refreshing look at ultra running. It’s honest and funny and makes you think deeper than you’d expect. It’s a serious and not so serious look at why people do the sport.

I have listened to many books in the adventure cycling arena and this has definitely been my favorite! I wasn't expecting the book to be so funny. Anna does a great job of keeping it light while making great insights and making you feel like you're part of the journey. It was fun and motivational to listen to and I'm looking forward to checking out her other books!

Some good overall lessons, find summary online though

The most interesting part of this book is that the lessons are over a hundred years old and still hold (mostly) true. There are some very cringe worthy statements, some may be from the times but not all. I’d advise just reading the summary of the book online.

William Finnegan tells the story of beginning climbing with his daughter. She got into it and drug him along (mostly willingly). The author does a great job of balancing excellent writing but keeping it light and humorous. It is a cute short story that'll probably mostly interest parents and climbers.

Before Facebook and Instagram glorified escaping your boring real life for travel, this book set the stage. It was a best seller for a very long time and still very popular for a reason. It is very well written and you feel like you are traveling to all these places and meeting all the people alongside Elizabeth. It's a very good story but tainted a bit by her scant acknowledgement of the privilege she has to be able to quit everything, get a $10k advance on writing this book and travel.

As other reviewers noted, this is a very long title. It was an intriguing story and the author tells every tangential story imaginable. It's clear he did a ton of research and he didn't want to waste any of it. I think it would have been more enjoyable at about half the length. It was interesting to hear more about the lifestyles of the back country rangers in the National Parks.

Less about outdoors and more coming of age

I bought this title thinking it would be more about the northern dog sledding lifestyle. While this does provide the backdrop for the story, the main emphasis and story is centered around her coming of age and more time on sexuality than you might expect. It was still a fine book, I was just expecting it to be a little more adventure oriented than it was.

I was eager to listen to this after Something in the Water. This novel fixed some of the character unbelievably of her first, but she made this story very twisty. Other reviewers thought it started slow, but it didn't strike me that way. There were just so many plot turns it felt like she was trying a little too hard. Still a great book and narration, she has a perfect accent for reading.

Brendon is well known in the outdoors community. He has a blog and social medias called Semi-Rad where he combines humor and wit into common outdoors situations. This is a very open and honest book about his life growing up in small town Iowa before moving to the mountains. The book focuses a lot on his early partying and addiction to binge drinking and how he ultimately got away from that and lives a fulfilling life outdoors. This is a great book for anyone interested in addiction recovery, moving to the mountains or generally escaping an imprisoning situation.

Burnout is real, and many people are experiencing a self-diagnosed version. This book (essay) gives a voice to a few different people at the end of their rope. Everybody needs some good self-analysis and self-care, but the author doesn't give any voice to people who methodically and purposely push their endurance limits. It'd be an interesting follow-up to show how different people handle the same set of given circumstances. After reading some biographies about generations growing up in the early and mid 20th century, I believe they had a lot more hardships and things to complain about than young people today. There's certainly a balance to getting rid of things in your life that don't serve you and gaining grit to push through.
