Really enjoyed this novel, as well as Daniel Penz' fantastic audiobook narration. What a team he and Bill McCurry make!
I was somehow not expecting great things from an indy writer's novel. Boy, did I learn a lesson from that poor assumption. The story was exciting, gritty, and engaging, the characters interesting and believable. Great stuff and very recommended.
Really hoping that Book 3 is released as an audiobook too! I will read further regardless, but books 1 and 2 were a great audio experience.

Read this trilogy as a teen, which spurred me on to read pretty much everything BH had written to date.
Fair warning re the audio book. The narrator is very wooden and robotic in her delivery, enunciating sometimes painfully. If it were not for the incredible original prose, the performance would have driven me mad.

Yes, it's long, and the pace is slow, if not plodding at times. Still, for the fan of the vampire tale, this is worth a read and I for one am glad I stuck with it.
This novel is not the traditional vampire yarn, and perhaps that makes it even more refreshing. An interesting take on a familiar and exciting genre.

Beware: Annoying Narrator!

If you're interested in this book, I would highly recommend buying the paperback and not the audiobook. The narrator is incredibly irritating, and has been constant negative reinforcement against listening.
The book is a decent read - not great, but decent - but the horrible reader has almost made me stop reading the book several times.
