Historia
Riley Denton-Everett always felt like something was missing in her life—and her numerous odd jobs and short-lived relationships haven’t brought her any closer to finding it. Everything changes when she receives a mysterious message: You’re a Denton. You belong on Starfall Point. Once you’re here, I’ll tell you everything you need to know. When Riley arrives on the island, she learns her aunt has left her a historic mansion brimming with haunted antiques. Turns out, that’s not the only thing she’s inherited. Riley also hails from a long line of witches.

A rare miss
Revisado: 03-14-24
I usually truly enjoy Molly Harper’s stories, but the main character in this one started off so unlikeably self-righteous and unnecessarily antagonistic that I felt too bad for the male lead (knowing he’d be shoved into a storyline that would somehow leave him stuck and inexplicably, bafflingly, ‘in love’ with an absolute jerk) to continue, and I put it down a few chapters in. Because I like the author, the works-building, and the mystery subplot, I eventually picked it back up to get to the end, and there were marginal improvements, but it remained irrationally biased towards the female lead, always treating her as the wounded party even when she was definitely more in the wrong than the male lead, and I was too busy wincing in concern to root for them as a couple.
This would have been a MUCH better book if it had just been a mystery and nixed the forced, unpleasant romance shoehorned in. A genuinely rare miss from a usually enjoyable storyteller.

Slice of life with slimes
Revisado: 08-15-23
An easy listen, slice of life story. Not a lot of conflict, but that’s honestly a nice change of pace in my opinion. It’s often really jarring to have a new narrator in a series, but Ray is fairly consistent which can’t have been easy! The switch wasn’t as disruptive as I feared. An easy, enjoyable listen. Looking forward to the next installment!

Historia
One day, the life of middle-aged Japanese businessman Ryoma Takebayashi came to a rather sudden and disappointing end. Ryoma had never had a blessed life, but after his death, three great gods sought his cooperation and reincarnated him as a child in another world with swords and magic!

A relaxed story with a great performance
Revisado: 08-01-23
Jon does a wonderful job of bringing the characters and conversations to life. His voices for the wide variety of folks the appear in the story are excellent - Mia in particular totally made me smile.
It’s a cozy, easy-paced story (some may say slow) more about making connections and relationships and slowly expanding a world than anything, featuring the kind of protagonist who holes up in a forest to study slimes for three years, so if you’re looking for an action-paced OP level grind in another world—this story isn’t that except in the margins. Personally, I enjoy the more relaxed story that still plays with the tropes that make this genre so fun, and definitely recommend it.

Historia
In the underground city of Caverna the world's most skilled craftsmen toil in the darkness to create delicacies beyond compare - wines that can remove memories, cheeses that can make you hallucinate and perfumes that convince you to trust the wearer, even as they slit your throat. The people of Caverna are more ordinary, but for one thing: their faces are as blank as untouched snow. Expressions must be learned, and only the famous Facesmiths can teach a person to show (or fake) joy, despair or fear - at a price.

Well done!
Revisado: 12-22-20
One of my favorites by Frances Hardinge, a twisty, tricky romp that doubles back delightfully in places and is infused with entertaining worldbuilding. Kevin does a really enjoyable job with the voices.
