The story, characters, and performance all drew me in, and I only wish it could have been longer. But, in the end, it was the perfect length, like a poem. Recommended.

Interesting ideas, lots of generalizations

Some great food for thought here. Just be prepared to mentally transform the generalizations (“white people do ...”) to something with less certainty (“many white people...” or “white people tend to...”).

A book that needed to be written

This is a well-written story to help you understand the possible realities behind the headlines. It grabbed my mind and kept me wanting to listen as few other books have. The characters are well drawn, varied, and three-dimensional. The settings alone offer plenty to think about as the main character navigates her world. Thank you, Angie Thomas, for writing this very important book.

Great character, not cliche plot

Well-drawn characters. The characters and setting would lend themselves to a predictable outcome, but I was surprised several times by the turn of events. Led to a satisfying end. Lots of good material for conversation with my preteens.
