Historia
In December 1926, Agatha Christie goes missing. Investigators find her empty car on the edge of a deep, gloomy pond, the only clues some tire tracks nearby and a fur coat left in the car - strange for a frigid night. Her World War I veteran husband and her daughter have no knowledge of her whereabouts, and England unleashes an unprecedented manhunt to find the up-and-coming mystery author. Eleven days later, she reappears, just as mysteriously as she disappeared, claiming amnesia and providing no explanations for her time away.

Too silly
Revisado: 04-18-25
I really wanted to like this one. But the narrator’s high, silly voice really distracts. That said, the story itself is weak. And the mixing of modern metaphor and language use with a story that’s supposed to be taking place 100 years ago is distracting. It wouldn’t have been hard for the author to have used less anachronistic language.

This is not the game or even the TV series
Revisado: 01-22-25
I bought this because the TV series, The Last of Us, was so good and I thought the novels that were the very loose basis must be equally good. They in no way resemble the television series. The writing is terrible. The authors have a poor command of the English language. Their usage is about at a 5th grade level and it's so bad it's distracting. The book editor should have helped them out, but failed to do so.
The TV series and, I guess, the game, is set in modern times and has many different compelling story lines. This dystopian story line has humanity put back into the Stone Age, living in a medieval society. It's a good premise and, with proper editing and guidance, could have worked well. But again, the less-than-professional level of writing takes away from enjoyment.
The over-dramatic narration also distracts.

Historia
Civil war looms in the Bobiverse in this brand-new, epic-length adventure by Audible number one best seller Dennis E. Taylor. More than a hundred years ago, Bender set out for the stars and was never heard from again. There has been no trace of him despite numerous searches by his clone-mates. Now Bob is determined to organize an expedition to learn Bender’s fate - whatever the cost. But nothing is ever simple in the Bobiverse. Bob’s descendants are out to the 24th generation now, and replicative drift has produced individuals who can barely be considered Bobs anymore.

He’s losing the plot
Revisado: 12-06-24
The first Bob book was incredible as a look at human behavior and psychology. That’s what science fiction does best. This one had the chance to do that, but it didn’t. It got bogged down in the detail, and most of the plot movement occurred sort of magically, while we had long, long boring narratives about swimming up and down rivers and getting in and out of elevators. I would love to have seen more exploration of the juvenile, for instance. And why didn’t we have more description of Hugh’s interaction with the AI? Spoiler alert here — Why did the AI magically decide to cooperate? That action takes place offscreen, so to speak. And how had it gotten such great control of an entire planet in the first place? I really did not need repeated description of all the different Bobs being geeks together. It’s too bad because Dennis Taylor is a talented writer.

Doesn’t quite make it
Revisado: 11-27-24
This is so slow! It’s a lot like the very very beginning of the Expanse, which was also so slow. But it never catches on. Long, long passages of narrative, made tedious by the narrator. It was so hard to remember what was going on, because of the long, long descriptive passages, which were unnecessary. The narration itself was slow and the pace of the narrator made it very easy to drift off and stop paying attention. It’s hard to remember whose point of view is being represented, in part because a name was often introduced at the beginning of a chapter, and then just “he” or “she” used for paragraph after paragraph afterwards. The style does not lend itself to audiobook narration. It might read better on the page, but as an audiobook this was a fail.

Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

Not the best in this series
Revisado: 11-13-24
I love this series and it usually comforts me. But this particular book is not as good as some of the others in the series. For one thing, there’s not enough Ruth or Gabri. I’m also sad to lose the former narrator. The plot is overly convoluted and not necessarily logical or believable. Also, Louise Penny way over uses the phrase “suddenly became very still.” Find another, please.

Zzzzzzzzzzzz
Revisado: 10-16-24
OMG how tedious can a book get? It only gets 2 stars because of the title. The narrator is great, even if she doesn’t know how to pronounce “quadruped.” How on Earth did she stay awake? This book could have been edited down to one quarter the length and still have too much extraneous description of nothing. Where were the editors?

Historia
The Bobiverse is a different place in the aftermath of the Starfleet War, and the days of the Bobs gathering in one big happy moot are far behind. There’s anti-Bob sentiment on multiple planets, the Skippies playing with an AI time bomb, and multiple Bobs just wanting to get away from it all. But it all pales compared to what Icarus and Daedalus discover on their 26,000-year journey to the center of the galaxy.

You sold out to the D&D crowd, Dennis
Revisado: 09-27-24
LOVED the first Bobiverse books. What insight into how humans might behave, given Godlike powers. But this book has sold out to a certain faction of the large Dennis E Taylor fan base. These are the people who would have been in the corner of the cafeteria in high school, playing dungeons and dragons. And the more this book went on, the more it turned me into the high school jock who wanted to punch those kids in the face. And I am a pudgy, middle aged woman. So. Don't do this, Dennis. We did not need dragons. And we really did not need dragon sex. OK? There are way, way too many Bobs in the series now. The writing is still good and you could have stayed on point with the insight. The female characters are gratuitous and they did not need to be. It's a damn shame.

Did AI or a high school student write this?
Revisado: 09-01-24
I thought this book could not get worse, and then it did. Was it the bad grammar? The sloppy usage? The use of every cliche known to the English language? Or perhaps it was the holes in the "plot." Who reads this drivel? But more important, who or what wrote it? The narrator read it in precisely the way it was supposed to be read, i,e, in an overdramatic way. She should have refused to do it. Shame on the publisher.

What a story!
Revisado: 08-28-24
When I started this book, I was afraid I wasn’t going to be able to read it. I could tell it was going to be a very, very hard story. But there is just enough lightness and hope
mixed in to make it bearable. It’s definitely true to life, and it makes you think hard about the immigration crisis in the US and the factors that are causing it. You care about all of the characters, the conversation and dialogue ring true, and the plot has enough drama, twist, and turns, and unexpected outcomes to keep your interest.

So very trite
Revisado: 08-04-24
I am trying to make myself finish this book to give it a fair chance. But what murder mystery writer doesn’t know that it’s cyanide that smells like almonds, not arsenic? And how can she possibly not know that arsenic does not make people sleepy, nor does it kill them instantly. It’s a pretty simple and basic fact to get wrong, and it’s hard to take a book seriously when something this distracting goes so wrong so early in. Even worse are the innumerable cliches and mixed metaphors. The book was free from audible, so I got what I paid for!
