The Usual "Higgins Like" Story

What did you like best about A Devil is Waiting? What did you like least?

I liked the character Sara - (my grandmother's first name) - because she was tough, and went after what she wanted and got it.

What could Jack Higgins have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

This story had too much "he said" "she said", and to much conversation about people. It was hard to follow; I was half way through the story before I was able to distinguish between the good guys and the bad guys. Sometimes that is okay, but it seemed to me that Higgins intended for the reader to know this before half way into the story. Also, there was very little suspense to the story. Not until the end was there really any "thrill factor". and even then, well it was "thin". Seems to me that Higgins jumped on the al Qaeda "bandwagon", used that topic to tell a story, but the story was not very engaging.

Another "Barr none" great read

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book to anyone.

What did you like best about this story?

Anna Pidgeon's focus on humanity and the environment, and her caring about "the cats". She never took for granted, as did other characters in the story, that "the cat" did the dirty deed of murder.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Anna rescued herself from the "shelf of disaster", characterized by her falling onto a narrow shelf down a mountainside. She kept fighting to survive.

This is another wonderful Anna Pigeon story. It begins with a death that is quickly written off as a "cat kill". But Anna, ever the observant and astute ranger notices clues that would lead to another conclusion. Nevada Barr brings all her characters to life. One thing I always enjoy about Barr's stories is that she has just the right number and types of characters. She fleshes out each one, and by the end of the story I feel as if I've lived with each one and know them almost intimately. This is important in Barr's storytelling because she places each character in a position to be the good guy/gal, or the bad guy/gal. Her wrtiting then brings the grand finale to endings that are satisfying and realistic for each character. This story takes place in Texas, and she is spot on with her description of the National Park, and the Texas landowners. The conflict she exposes between "money" and the maintenance and preservation of the National Park gives intensity and depth to the story. The reader for this story is also very good; she has just the right intonations and inflections; not too little, not too much. Her reading adds believability to the story. I recommen this Audible book to the legions of Nevada Barr fans, and to others, who, when they listen to this book, will want more! Thank you Nevada Barr for another great story, and thanks to Audible for making it available.

What did you love best about Agincourt?

The characters in this story came to life through their actions and how they moved the story along. The author developed the characters, then kept them in context with the story. The time period was a belligerant one - during the French - English war. I liked that the story was told in a historically correct manner. This is a love story, buried in a time when women were not valued - well, THAT is an understatement, so the love story that emerges provides a peaceful respite to the warring that is constant.

Which scene was your favorite?

Nick saving himself and his future bride in Swason.

If you could take any character from Agincourt out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Father Christian. He saw the way of the world.

Any additional comments?

Really...if very explicit descriptions of killing and raping and pillaging bother you..be aware, this book leaves nothing to the imagination.

Unbroken - A must Read

This is the story of American Pilots who were POWs in Japan. It starts, however, in an American town, and progresses through the training and fighting in the Pacific. It follows the love interests and the strength of the pilots in both their belief in what they were doing, and how to survive. The story is so well told that I felt that I was right there with them most of the time. It is historically accurate. It was well narrated, and a great book for a long trip. I say that because I often found myself so engrossed that I was not doing other things I needed to be doing when I listened for a short time - in other words, hard to turn it off. The book is an eye opener about our Allied Forces captured in Japan. It is absolutely a must read for Americans, Brits, and Aussies.

Follett is a master story teller -

Follett's characters are vivid, and the lords, serfs, Bishops, and kings of the 14th century are masterfully created. Every breath, death, disaster, and triumph is riveting and real. The 14th century comes to life through the protagonists' hardships and personal strengths to overcome them. The story is a love story in a time of peace and war, hardship and plenty, disaster and rejuvenation.
It begins with the main characters as children in an England ruled by classes and Bishops. The characters reveal themselves to us over their lifespan. Each character brings a new story within the story. Gwenda, a daughter in a poor family - sold as a slave by her father so the family can buy food. Wolford, the son of a landowner - has his land stolen from him, negating the promise of marriage within his class. Carras, a modern woman who thinks for herself, who wants to become a doctor, but cannot because women cannot be doctors - and is accused of being a witch. Mervyn, a builder of great cathedrals, castles, bridges, and houses, who journeys to Florence where his talents become recognized far and wide - can he survive the plague? Can his wife and child survive? In fact, can anyone survive the French and English war, and the plague? Follett's many characters are entertwined and yet separate, strong, yet with weaknesses that challenge their very existence in a land and time that is unforgiving, and rich all at once. This is a must "read" - or "listen". I recommend the unabridged version.
The reader for this story is perfect - just the right accent, the right intonations, and speed.

I'd love to say I like this, because the description sounds fascinating...the truth is, I had to start the audio over at least 3 times because it was so boring I lost track of where the story was. I did manage to "give it a try" by listerning all the way through the first 3 parts of the unabridged version. Unfortunately, the character descriptions were incongrous and difficult to follow (audibly), and I kept losing track of who was who and where each character fit into the plot/story. This audio book really is a chronilogical story that develops verrrrrrY SLOWLY. Maybe it's me - but I think there's too little action, not enough literary connection between events which leaves a lot of guesswork to the listener. Maybe the abridged version is better....I don't recommend it unless you need sometyhing to put you to sleep...

The Afghan - Thumbs Down for Audio

Maybe this book needs to be read, rather than "read to me". I had to restart 3 times because I stopped listening. I stopped listening because - well - it was just plain boring. Written/read in the past tense, I never could become intetrested in the story - if there was one. Because I'm willing to give every book a chance, I listened for 4 hours - but then - I cut my losses. You should cut yours by not putting any money into it to begin with. I gave it a 1 star rating because the method of rating doesn't allow for less.
