Crucifixion, the Romans believed, was the worst fate imaginable, a punishment reserved for slaves. How astonishing it was, then, that people should have come to believe that one particular victim of crucifixion - an obscure provincial by the name of Jesus - was to be worshipped as a god. Dominion explores the implications of this shocking conviction as they have reverberated throughout history.

Isn't it great that throughout history the good guys (those on the side of Love) have always won? I sure think so.

Here in a single volume is the entire, unabridged recording of Gibbon's masterpiece. Beginning in the second century A.D. at the apex of the Pax Romana, Gibbon traces the arc of decline and complete destruction through the centuries across Europe and the Mediterranean. It is a thrilling and cautionary tale of splendor and ruin, of faith and hubris, and of civilization and barbarism. Follow along as Christianity overcomes paganism... before itself coming under intense pressure from Islam.

That's really all I can say, this was a bit of a long listen, but it is an amply rewarding work which I recommend perusing along with the footnotes where one can.

Historia
The German invasion of Poland on 1 September, 1939, designated as Fall Weiss (Case White), was the event that sparked the outbreak of World War II in Europe. The campaign has widely been described as a textbook example of Blitzkrieg, but it was actually a fairly conventional campaign as the Wehrmacht was still learning how to use its new Panzers and dive-bombers. The Polish military is often misrepresented as hopelessly obsolete and outclassed by the Wehrmacht, yet in fact it was well-equipped with modern weapons and armor.

Interesting, But You Need a Map
Revisado: 06-11-22
This is a very detailed and well researched history of the German campaign in Poland, its clearly author knows his stuff and I appreciated the narrator's authentic pronunciations, which demonstrates a level of attention to detail that must be commended.
Having said that, I'm more of a political and cultural history than a military history guy so once the background information was out of the way and the war had actually started I found myself getting a little tired of the more detailed accounts of individual operations and combats.
Both the background material and the actual account of Case White are detailed and well researched and it's clear that the author did a great deal of cross-checking sources and did not simply accept conventional accounts of the campaign.
Overall, as Lincoln said, it's the kind of thing you'd like if you like that sort of thing.

Historia
In the decade before the onset of the Civil War, groups of Americans engaged in a series of longshot - and illegal - forays into Mexico, Cuba, and other Central American countries in hopes of taking them over. These efforts became known as filibustering, and their goal was to seize territory to create new independent fiefdoms, which would ultimately be annexed by the still-growing United States. Most failed miserably. William Walker was the outlier. Soft-spoken with no military background, in 1856 he managed to install himself as president of Nicaragua.

Frankly Boring
Revisado: 04-14-22
I had a difficult time finishing this book, to be quite honest. William Walker despite being an adventurer par excellence, was a rather boring person and the writer does very little to bring his somewhat reserved and self-contained personality to life.
In general the book does not bring Walker or the cast of characters surrounding him to life, even the extraordinarily flamboyant Parker H. French comes off rather flat and grey.
The book also might be improved if one read it with the accompanying maps from the book within convinient reach.

Historia
For almost two decades, through the War of 1812, James Wilkinson was the senior general in the United States Army. Amazingly, he was also Agent 13 in the Spanish secret service at a time when Spain's empire dominated North America. Wilkinson's audacious career as a double agent is all the more remarkable because it was an open secret, circulated regularly in newspapers and pamphlets. His saga illuminates just how fragile and vulnerable the young republic was.

The American Blackadder
Revisado: 03-19-22
I cannot praise this book highly enough. Major General James Wilkinson, the subject of this biography, participated in almost every scandal, plot, and political intrigue from the Revolution until the War of 1812 contributing to each in a decidedly unhelpful and self-serving way. If you enjoy stories about rogues or if you love the early Republic you will enjoy this story, which intersects in some way with almost every luminary who crossed the stage of American life from about 1780 to 1830.

Historia
George Washington’s military strategy has been called bumbling at worst and brilliant at best. So which is it? Was George Washington a strategic genius or just lucky? So asks Dave R. Palmer in George Washington’s Military Genius. An updated edition of Palmer’s earlier work, The Way of the Fox, George Washington’s Military Genius breaks down the American Revolution into four phases and analyzes Washington’s strategy during each.

Illuminating
Revisado: 03-03-22
The book provides a useful perspective on Washington and on the war itself. Somewhat reminiscent of "The Grand Strategy of the Roman Empire," the author breaks the war down into different phases which demanded different strategies and argues that Washington correctly adapted his strategic posture to the balance of forces and the progress of the war.
Washington is often seen as a merely mediocre general, and this book provides a useful counter to that narrative. While Washington wasn't Bonaparte, I think this provides a convincing argument that his generalship, particularly his grasp of strategy and his political acumen, were instrumental in winning independence.

Historia
During the Persian Wars, Sparta and Athens worked in tandem to defeat what was, in terms of relative resources and power, the greatest empire in human history. For the decade and a half that followed, they continued their collaboration until a rift opened and an intense, strategic rivalry began. In a continuation of his series on ancient Sparta, noted historian Paul Rahe examines the grounds for their alliance, the reasons for its eventual collapse, and the first stage in an enduring conflict that would wreak havoc on Greece for six decades.

Misleading Title, Great Book
Revisado: 05-13-21
Dr. Rahe once again has produced a fantastic, lively, and engaging account of Classical Greek history, but much as I found with The Grand Strategy of Classical Sparta, the book is far less a high-level take on Spartan grand strategy and more an engaging and informative narrative history which (by necessity given the sources) mainly seems to revolve around Athens. But even if Dr. Rahe has done so unintentionally, he has succeeded in producing one of the best, most coherent and unified existing narrative histories of Classical Greece, which is a very considerable achievement.
