Only the intrusive, loud music is a negative.

As always, Orson Scott Card is an excellent story writer. These First Meetings fill in bits of the story that those of us who love the Ender universe really appreciate. The performance was excellent, as well. Fortunately, most of the audio book allows the performers (Gabrielle De Cuir, Amanda Karr, Stefan Rudnicki) to do an excellent job unimpeded.

The only negative in this audio book is the nerve-grating, so-called "music" that intrudes at the ends of the stories. The music was so loud and so grating that I actually had a very hard time hearing the end of the story--something that was incredibly annoying. I like the little wrap-ups, and the intrusive noise was robbing me of that part of the story experience. It must be irritating to anyone who is focused on the story, but it is especially difficult for those of us who cannot separate the noise from the speaking (a learning disability of a sort*), particularly because the noise was louder than the narration. PLEASE, PLEASE remove that terrible racket so I can actually hear and enjoy the end of the story! (*I was forced to go find a written version, so I could actually tell what was being said.)

What did you love best about The Collected?

The performance is great. The story is compelling and holds my interest. It is well worth the listen. However, there is a major flaw. In the middle of the story, four highly trained and highly skilled people who are excellent at spotting and losing a professional tail (among other skills) -- because their lives literally depend upon such skills -- are somehow tailed across the United States and Mexico by someone who is attempting to trail another person for the very first time in her life, without a single one of those four professionals spotting her doing so! This is so ridiculous that it was difficult for me to suspend belief enough to remain immersed in the story at that point. This is sad, because the rest of the story is quite good.

What other book might you compare The Collected to and why?

All the books in the series, because the stories are compelling and well performed.

Which character – as performed by Scott Brick – was your favorite?

The main character.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

On a technical note (rather than a content one), there were several places in which there is a tiny glitch in the recording, creating either a slight amount of "dead air" or a slight dropout of a word or two. The glitches were definitely recording errors and not performance errors.
