Historia
Oxnard Matheson was twelve when his father taught him a lesson: Ox wasn’t worth anything and people would never understand him. Then his father left. Ox was sixteen when the energetic Bennett family moved in next door, harboring a secret that would change him forever. The Bennetts are shapeshifters. They can transform into wolves at will. Drawn to their magic, loyalty, and enduring friendships, Ox feels a gulf between this extraordinary new world and the quiet life he’s known, but he finds an ally in Joe, the youngest Bennett boy.

Couldn't finish
Revisado: 08-11-24
The narrators voice grated on me and his total lack of emotion bored me. This is the third Klune book I've tried and I just find his writing infantile and disjointed. All personal opinions, but I only made it about half way through this one.

San Francisco. 1947. The war is over and the boys are home. Nick Williams, a native of the City, served in the Navy during the war. Now he lives with his lover Jeffery Klein, Esq., in Jeffery's house. He knows he needs to move on, but he can't. Not yet at least. Carter Jones, a transplant from south Georgia, stayed home during the war. His draft board said his job as a fireman was more important.

A fine story
Revisado: 01-14-22
The story is fine. Nothing groundbreaking or heart-stopping, but enjoyable. I did find the narration fairly annoying and almost gave up several times. His cadence and rhythm within the sentence structure is very strange, and his voice for some of the characters is awful, particularly Carter.

Good story. Horrible narration.
Revisado: 08-19-21
The story is engrossing as King usually is. However the narrator, Paul Sparks, is atrocious. He talks in a severe bass, hard to hear, and breathy sentences like he smokes 10 packs a day. Most times he doesn’t have enough air to finish his sentences and they come out weak and whispery. It seems like he’s never had any professional voice training whatsoever. His enunciation is also exceedingly sloppy. It didn’t ruin the experience for me to the point of not being able to finish it, like it did for some other reviewers, but I’d strongly suggest reading this book rather than listening to it.

Historia
Leland Gaunt opens a new shop in Castle Rock called Needful Things. Anyone who enters his store finds the object of his or her lifelong dreams and desires: a prized baseball card, a healing amulet. In addition to a token payment, Gaunt requests that each person perform a little "deed", usually a seemingly innocent prank played on someone else from town. These practical jokes cascade out of control, and soon the entire town is doing battle with itself. Only Sheriff Alan Pangborn suspects that Gaunt is behind the population's increasingly violent behavior.

Leave it to the pros
Revisado: 04-08-19
I love Stephen Kings writing but he really should leave the voice work to the professionals. It’s pretty rough to listen to.
This version also has some simply dreadful music interludes that are painful to listen to.
