A very neat, well written murder mystery. Great character development and use of language.
Colin Mace does an excellent job as narrator.
I'll be back for more.

Not what to expect from Ken Follett

Revisado: 09-11-24

I’m a Ken Follett fan and this book does not stack up: the depth of writing is not there and how it addresses some key issues comes across ham fisted.

Ken doesn’t shy away from complex relationship themes of both sexes but this feels more like a clumsy attempt to appeal to contemporary female relationship tropes.

Sorry but I don’t think this was written by him….maybe the hint is in the summary ‘10 years since his last novel’.

And if he did, I can only explain it by concluding that his strength lies in historically based drama, and not in the present.

I should have listened to some of the other reviews warning the same.

A great premise but missed opportunity

The combination of writer and military leader got me into this book, and the underlying premise of the conflict is a good one however;

The prosecution of the premise as it unfolds is underdone, presenting as half baked (most glaringly the ‘red line’ for the USA.). A missed opportunity to unpack the implications of intertwining details across military and politics in more detail.

The humanistic side stories feel laboured and in some instances paragraphs are devoted to threads that go nowhere and have no bearing on the story. Not Tom Clancy.

Lastly, I don’t see the need for a caste of narrators, didn’t add to the delivery.

The best part of this book is the interview with Admiral Stavridas at the end.

I'm sorry to go against the grain on this review, but this book is terrible. I couldnt even force myself to finish it.
I say this having been an audible member since 2008 and with almost 500 titles in my library. I love action and I was certainly a fan of the first three books in the series. Tom Clancy & Vince Flyn are complete collections and all time favs.

But this book is nothing like those:

First the story plot. fanciful and full of holes. A global sex trafficking empire with some silicon valley tosser ruling it over all the established crime gangs?!?!? I don't think so. Where's Austin Powers when you need him?

Second the main characters motivations. We are supposed to believe that Court Gentry waits for days to take a kill then just decides to expose himself by going in (on his own) to take everyone out. Then, he gives up his long standing SOP to go 'rouge' and pull apart this whole operations - for free and without orders...because....??

Third and most grating are the pros and language used. full of hyperbole and bait language that apart from being unnecessary to the story (yes, we get it that the girls are slaves and its bad - but how many times do we need to be told?), clogs up narrative and sentence structure to hurt the ear - if I was reading this, it would be a certain gloss over.

In short, I could not but help wondering who wrote this (and who edited??), if anyone real actually wrote it at all, other than insert a few chat prompts?

anyway, thats my feedback, 11,000 others loved it.

enjoy.

An excellent Mickey Haller addition

For those who like the Mickey Haller series read by Peter Giles, this does not disappoint.
The story is well crafted and brings together elements from Mickeys past.
There is a review lamenting the politics of this book, but while contemporary to the period of its setting, I struggled to find ANY reference to either Fox News or Trump.
This is a bitter battle between the DA and an innocent man, leaving you feeling lucky that that man is Mickey Haller. Enjoy.

In my humble opinion, The Drop (Book 15) was the last great Bosch listen.

Say what you like about Titus as Harry on TV, but a narrator he is not. Flat, monotone, boring. It kills the characters and kills the book.

Further, it seems to me that the journey is becoming tired. Character development is off the boil and story feels forced.

But, the real issue is narration. I simply do not understand why producers tinker with great narrators of series with central characters? Think James Marsters for The Dresden Files (Jim Butcher) and George Guidall for Mitch Rapp (Vince Flynn) - Len Cariou or even Dick Hill are the narrators for Harry Bosch.

It pains me to say it that I did not finish this book and am now finished with the Bosch series (though not with Michael Connelly).

(see reviews from Gabrielle 'Boring Voice!' and Antonio 'A good reading, but Bosch stories are aging...' for balanced reviews)

Many Connelly fans may overlook Void Moon for the more popular characters and series, but this would be a mistake.
I have listened to more than 25 Connelly audio books and Void Moon is right up there with his best.

Story pacing, development and suspense is first class. The LA Times got it right when they said, ”that rarity—a riveting, breathless thriller that not only sucks you in completely, it leaves you with the satisfying feeling that you haven’t been wasting your time on brain candy.”

Narration is also excellent. LJ Ganser does a more than commendable job and inexplicably I cannot find any other work by him on Audible.

Void Moon and Ganser do not disappoint. Enjoy

Why do they persist on changing narrators mid series??

I have been re-listening to the whole Connelly series and love it. However, for anyone listening to this series and making this far, the change in narrator not only destroys character development, but this particular narrator is flat and hollow. It is so bad that it makes me feel this book is ghost written by someone else. Where is Len Cariou??
Not finished and and returned.

A Truly HARROWING & TRAUMATIC Story

Would you listen to The Cartel again? Why?

Yes absolutely, but proceed with caution as the story (as it is a work of fiction) is harrowing and traumatic, though made all the more so as you know it draws directly from the headlines of the day.

The story is certainly gripping, but I find myself regularly in a state of shock as the book progresses; the events are simply appalling, the writing so personal, the emotional connection so real...there are several times where I need to stop listening, just to take a break and calm down.

I don't find myself normally so squeamish, but this story has tested my limits.

What other book might you compare The Cartel to and why?

Possibly Stalingrad by Antony Beever and others covering the Eastern Front of WWII, they certainly conveyed brutality on a grand scale, though The Cartel makes it intensely personal and so hopeless.

What does Ray Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Ray does a great job in bring the personalities and situation to life. I cannot imagine reading the book and getting the same impact as he delivers.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Not for people with heart trouble, kids or loved ones.
