Historia
In this exuberant retelling of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Lydia Bennet puts pen to paper to relate the real events and aftermath of the classic story. Some facts are well known: Mrs. Bennet suffers from her nerves, Mr. Bennet suffers from Mrs. Bennet, and all five daughters suffer from an estate that is entailed only to male heirs. But Lydia also suffers from entirely different concerns: her best-loved sister Kitty is really a barn cat; Wickham is every bit as wicked as the world believes him to be, but what else would one expect from a demon?

A delightful retelling of the Austen-verse
Revisado: 02-22-25
A wild take on the beloved characters of Jane Austen. Here her wickedly immoral characters find a place of understanding, albeit a supernatural one. So, if you enjoyed “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” this book is for you.

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway - a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors.

The ice is coming. It was the last thing we expected, but the world is freezing. A new ice age has dawned. Billions have fled the glaciers. A cataclysmic war is coming. In orbit, a group of scientists are running the Winter Experiments, a last-ditch attempt to understand why the planet is cooling. None of the climate models they build make sense. But then they discover an anomaly, an unexplained variation in solar radiation...and something else. I do not usually enjoy sci-fi, apocalyptic, or dystopian genres. I read this book as a challenge outside my comfort zone. I appreciated the story, the characters, and the narrators, so now I must finish the trilogy.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Perfect cozy romance at a cafe
Revisado: 12-08-24
Abigail Drake stands out as a cozy romance author. I often find myself rolling my eyes and considering a "Did Not Finish" on other authors' works because of their overuse of words like "swoon," "swoony," and the repetitive descriptions of characters’ appearances. For example, the male love interest is always described as wearing his signature combat boots and jeans whenever he appears. Overall, I find much of cozy romance writing to be shallow and basic, with characters that can be quite annoying.
However, I believe Drake is different. *The Enchanted Garden Café* is a heartwarming read that focuses on relationships, frenemies, community, and a touch of magic. The characters have flaws but remain relatable, even throughout the romantic elements. Drake skillfully writes romance with just the right amount of spice without resorting to smutty language or ridiculous descriptions of sexual situations. It’s sexy but not vulgar, which strikes the perfect balance for me.
I think I may have found a cozy series I can truly dive into! According to Goodreads, there are three books published out of four planned. However, there has been a long wait between book three and any news about book four. I read the author’s premise for book four, and it sounds so promising!

Revisado: 10-10-24
The Wizard’s Butler combines two different people one an aging wizard, the other a wizened army veteran that find they need each other more than they ever expected. In one of the more understated novels on magical beings, there are no blasts or staffs, but there is cleverness and wit.

Veronica Henry weaves a historical fiction with magical realism about the old spirits of Africa lurking in a post depression era carnival. In the new world it’s sometimes called voodoo or Santeria but the ancient lore of bargaining with spirits and demons can be found in all religions.

Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.
