Historia
If we do what is right, everything else will follow: happiness, success, meaning, reputation, love. This is central to Stoic wisdom. The path isn't always easy, but it is essential, and the alternative - taking the easy route - leads only to cowardice and folly. In the third book in his bestselling Stoic Virtues series, Ryan Holiday explores the crucial role that integrity plays in every good life. From pillars of upright living like Ulysses S. Grant and Marcus Aurelius, to the cautionary tales of Napoleon and F. Scott Fitzgerald, this book shows us the power of owning our convictions.

The message of justice is one we all need and maybe Ryan thinks it's only the left who can do the right thing right now, but funny enough, the right can do right to and there is much learning for is here. Thanks Ryan, we can do this. ;-)

Historia
On July 12th, 1776, Captain James Cook, already lionized as the greatest explorer in British history, set off on his third voyage in his ship the HMS Resolution. Two-and-a-half years later, on a beach on the island of Hawaii, Cook was killed in a conflict with native Hawaiians. How did Cook, who was unique among captains for his respect for Indigenous peoples and cultures, come to that fatal moment? Hampton Sides' account of Cook's last journey both wrestles with Cook's legacy and provides a narrative of the titanic efforts and continual danger that characterised exploration in the 1700s.

I was looking for just this kind of book about James Cook. It is well researched, very detailed where it matters and overall a great telling of the last voyage by Captain Cook.
Happy I found this book.

Historia
The people of ancient Sumer are gathered to celebrate the rite of the Sacred Marriage, a joyous and glorious testament to the unity of Goddess and Man. Times are tough, crops are failing, and this year’s ceremony holds special significance. But for the priestess Simi, the fertility rite is very personal. Because it is Simi who will be locked in a room with a stranger to carry out the blessed responsibilities. Only this time, the stranger is no stranger at all....

21 century chat vs ancient cultures
Revisado: 06-21-24
The way the characters talk to each other has a very modern 2024 five to it while the story is clearly in ancient times and there seems incongruous.
And why does the goddess sound like a male if she is after all the goddess?

Deliciously old fashioned Bond
Revisado: 06-30-23
Hi Robert enjoyed reading or listening to this book. While it is almost impossible, not to think of the movie characters, we have known in the James Bond movies, I found eventually that the original James Bond came through, and was just as enjoyable as Roger Moore, and any other actors. An entertaining book, though not quite Jane Austen. 😉

The inscription on the Oracle of Delphi says: 'Nothing in excess.' C.S. Lewis described temperance as going to the 'right length but no further.' Easy to say, hard to practice—and if it was tough in 300 BCE, or in the 1940s, it feels all but impossible today. Yet it's the most empowering and important virtue any of us can learn. Drawing on ancient Stoic wisdom and examples across history and around the world, Ryan Holiday shows why self-control is so vital, and how to cultivate it in our own lives.

Revisado: 06-04-23
Ryan is fastidious in his writing and as with previous books, has managed to tell, teach and inspire us to incorporate many stoic ideas, values and virtues.
While we know we will never be stoic sages, we can arm ourselves with powerful stoic practices which make us better... all changes everyday, big results in a lifetime.

Historia
While Captain Aubrey worries about repairs to his ship, Stephen Maturin assumes the centre stage; for the dockyards and salons of Malta are alive with Napoleon's agents, and the admiralty's intelligence network is compromised. Maturin's cunning is the sole bulwark against sabotage of Aubrey's daring mission. All of Patrick O'Brian's strengths are on parade in this novel of action and intrigue, set partly in Malta, partly in the treacherous, pirate-infested waters of the Red Sea.

Third time listening. Really enjoined Ric Jerom's narration and obviously he was well supported by his director. Patrick O'Brian's canon of Aubrey and Maturin is truly epic.

Historia
Hardy's first major literary success, here brought to life by narrator Nathaniel Parker, is the story of the independent and spirited Bathsheba Everdene, who inherits her uncle's farm, the largest estate in the area. She surprises the villagers of Weatherbury by deciding to run it herself. Attracted to this bold young woman are three suitors all vying for her affections. They include the lonely gentleman-farmer Boldwood, the young and handsome but inconsiderate Sergeant Troy and the faithful shepherd Gabriel Oak.

Historia
In The War on the West, international best-selling author Douglas Murray asks: if the history of humankind is a history of slavery, conquest, prejudice, genocide and exploitation, why are only Western nations taking the blame for it? It’s become, he explains, perfectly acceptable to celebrate the contributions of non-Western cultures, but discussing their flaws and crimes is called hate speech. What’s more it has become acceptable to discuss the flaws and crimes of Western culture, but celebrating their contributions is also called hate speech.

Revisado: 06-09-22
My need for arguments against political correctness, CRT and woke craziness finds a great resource here. While a lot of it is based on things happening mainly in the USA, it clearly is being copied in other western countries and so makes this work broadly applicable to anyone wondering if this is the end of the line for the West. Spoiler alert: it is not.
Douglas has a pleasant voice , the production of this audio book benefits from it.
If you think or even worry about the ideological contest in the world now, this book comes highly recommended.

Dipping my toes into the classics, this has been a great listen. The narrator did an excellent job with his character voices, and the production put into this audio book is very good.
The character development by the author is so thorough and detailed, you really feel you know them well and understand their moral battles , their views on life.
A capital book.

Fortune favours the bold. All great leaders of history have known this, and were successful because of the risks they dared to take. But today, so many of us are paralysed by fear. Drawing on ancient Stoic wisdom and examples across history and around the world, Ryan Holiday shows why courage is so important, and how to cultivate it in our own lives. Courage is not simply physical bravery but also doing the right thing and standing up for what you believe; it's creativity, generosity and perseverance. And it is the only way to live an extraordinary, fulfilled and effective life.

Love you Ryan, but get a new narrator
Revisado: 10-22-21
Ryan Holiday's books are amazing and this is no exception. Do not be put of by my 3 stars for Performance, I think Ryan should not narrate himself and there surely is better talent out there.
This book gives you so much; info, history, mythology and literature about courage, being brave as one would expect. The shortness of the chapters lend themselves to using the book as a journal, to meditate on.
If you have read Ryan before, you'l encounter his favorite characters again, which only makes you understand them better.
Highly recommended for people who would speak truth to power against real injustices of the world.
