Historia
Imagine nine women meeting. Tea and cake are on the coffee table. They’ve come together to share their love of books. They are friends. They trust each other. It’s a happy gathering. What could be more harmless? Scratch the surface and look closer. One is lonely, one is desperate and one of them is a killer. When the body of a woman is discovered on a Cambridge common, DCI Barrett and DI Palmer are called to investigate. But the motive behind the crime isn’t clear...and it all leads back to a book club.

Not my cup of tea
Revisado: 10-24-24
The story was boring, the characters shallow and irredeemably unlikelable. The plot was thin and uninteresting.
The narrator gave a fantastic performance to a mediocre story.

Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

An interesting walk through history with enjoyable and relatable
Revisado: 07-23-24
I loved everything about this book, from the detailed setting of late 1700s New England, winter in Maine, to the well written characters and cultures and lifestyles of the people living in this time period.
The narrator captured Martha Ballard’s voice perfectly, as well as with many of the other characters, from her grown children and husband to the villains and shoppe keeper.
Reading the Note from the author at the end was a delight, I loved learning how the inspiration of the story came to be and that it was framed around actual people and events. Made this novel even richer than it already was.
I highly recommend reading this book, I will probably read it again.

A great catch-up for fans of Joe and Lyla
Revisado: 03-10-24
I’m a big fan of the Joe Talbert / Lyla Nash series. The characters are well written and developed and I enjoy catching up on the evolvement of their lives, relationship and career growth. The Life We Bury and The Shadows We Hide are definitely my favorites but this book was an enjoyable catch-up and I look forward to the continuing unfolding of their story.
This book focuses more on Lyla’s life, backstory and career and I enjoyed the characters in her professional life and learning about her back story and her personal growth.
The story had some good tugs that made me really angry with 2 of the antagonists, but had a nice gradual, if somewhat agonizingly long climb to a climactic peak and a tidy wrapped up conclusion.
I enjoyed the new characters in n this book and I’m hopeful to read more of them in the next book. I’m excited to see where Lyla and Joe’s relationship goes next! (But I have a good idea about that.)

Alice Wright marries handsome American Bennett Van Cleve hoping to escape her stifling life in England. So, when a call goes out for a team of women to deliver books as part of Eleanor Roosevelt’s new traveling library, Alice signs on enthusiastically. The leader, and soon Alice's greatest ally, is Margery, a smart-talking, self-sufficient woman who's never asked a man's permission for anything.

I love historical fiction!
Revisado: 03-08-23
This book was excellent! Loaded with history, the culture of eastern Kentucky and the women and men of the time. The characters are exquisitely written, especially Alice and Margery - strong women with their own opinions and passion for independence, education, reading and the tolerance to work in very difficult circumstances, the sweltering heat and biting insects, frigid bone chilling cold, traversing icy, snowy, mountainous terrain in the hills of Kentucky, risking confrontations with moonshiners and other troublesome characters. After reading this, I am intrigued to learn more about these strong brave women who were the packhorse librarians of Kentucky. Incredible book! Third time I’ve listened to it in probably as many years. Julia Whelan’s crisp delivery with distinct voices for each of the characters is a bonus.

Very enjoyable, interesting and educational read!
Revisado: 07-02-22
I enjoyed this book very much, it was a nice story with well developed characters who I think the reader comes to care for very much. It begins a bit disjointed, jumping around from character to character, before the characters are well defined, which was a bit confusing early on, but it eventually all came together. I learned so much about bees and the environment and the benefits of pollinators. I already had some knowledge but I developed a more in-depth knowledge and a protectiveness for bees after reading this book. I enjoyed it very much!
The narrator gave a distinctive, individual voice to each character making the audio version a nice listening experience.
A worthwhile read/listen.

We expect our judges to be honest and wise. Their integrity and impartiality are the bedrock of the entire judicial system. We trust them to ensure fair trials, to protect the rights of all litigants, to punish those who do wrong, and to oversee the orderly and efficient flow of justice. But what happens when a judge bends the law or takes a bribe? It’s rare, but it happens. Lacy Stoltz is an investigator for the Florida Board on Judicial Conduct. She is a lawyer, not a cop, and it is her job to respond to complaints dealing with judicial misconduct.

Couldn't get past the narrator's narration style
Revisado: 12-28-21
I'm a big John Grisham fan, but I can't listen to a book narrated by Cassandra Campbell, Her staccato, lilting, sing-song narration is so distracting, I'm unable to follow along with the story, or stay focused with what's happening. I tried at least a half dozen times to get past chapter 4, starting over and over again, because each time I got that far, I had absolutely no idea what was happening. I'm thrown out of the story by her narration style, I'll give this another try on kindle and just read it with my own mental narration.

Pulled me in right away and held me in suspense till the end!
Revisado: 11-23-21
The story grabbed me, hook, line and sinker from the beginning but the performance was astounding! I felt like I could see the characters, fully envision them, their surroundings, the setting, the whole book was done so well from the characters to the descriptions to the fantastic narration expertly delivered by these professional performers. An all around, well done, expertly crafted story telling experience. I’m looking forward to reading about more of detective Nina. She’s quickly become a likable character I’d like to follow and learn more about.

Horrific battles overcome!
Revisado: 10-19-20
I was horrified and shocked at the exposure of what these women, young girls and even young boys and some of the men are forced to endure and survive, if they can! Some don’t survive mentally if they survive physically, I was amazed at Carolyn’s persistence to go on when others might have given up when faced with such seemingly insurmountable odds. I am so proud of Carolyn for fighting through for herself and for her children! She is literally one tough mother!

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

An okay listen...
Revisado: 09-06-19
The story was okay, held my interest for the most part, but I found the narrator's lilting, sing-song narration style annoying and it dampened the overall performance of the story for me. I may have preferred reading this one, rather than listening to it. Some of the characters were narrated well, such as Jumpin’ and Mabel, but Kya's breathy, wide-eyed surprised voice, especially as she aged, was bothersome. The overall, syrupy slow narration of the performance also reduced the quality of the performance, and I became impatient to just hurry up and finish the book. Not my favorite Audible book.
