Ellis and Yiuli offer such great content—stuff you’ll use because it’s stuff Greeks say every day, without skipping the insights you need to understand why and how it fits together. Fun, real life, short dialogues, personal learning experiences shared, very well thought out and executed structure, never boring, always sweet. Appeals to a variety of learning styles. Even if there weren’t so much material out here-including on Audible-that’s not worth a byte of storage much less your time and money, this podcast would shine bright like a diamond. For me it’s been a perfect complement to the work I’m doing on Duolingo—on the road to understanding and being understood. I hope they continue for many years.

Historia
Can’t Hurt Me, David Goggins’ smash hit memoir, demonstrated how much untapped ability we all have but was merely an introduction to the power of the mind. In Never Finished, Goggins takes you inside his Mental Lab, where he developed the philosophy, psychology, and strategies that enabled him to learn that what he thought was his limit was only his beginning and that the quest for greatness is unending.

The Title Almost Says It All
Revisado: 12-03-23
I loved this book. The only thing I didn’t like was that I hadn’t read it 50 years ago. I’m now 62 and appreciate more than ever that the journey is never finished, the effort to be a best self is never finished, the forge is always at hand. I may have met a Master Sgt. Jack Gardner or two along the way and, unfortunately, just didn’t recognize him (or simply didn’t take advantage of those moments). The point is that David’s second book, even more than his hard charging first, is capable of waking up even the most settled of us at any age. I wish those I love most to read it. But I know what Goggins would say: just be it, and they’ll read you.
This audiobook, like the first, is narrated by Adam Skolnik with intermittent, great exchanges with Goggins himself (and a surprise walk-on). Skolnik’s narration is fairly matter-of-fact, and it has to be in order not to overact the amazing stories that flow thematically one after the other. (It’s a format I’m surprised more authors haven’t adopted.) In any case, when Skolnik and Goggins get to talking, there’s more than enough energy and excitement to keep you moving on to the next chapter.
Overall, although the book, like Goggins, may not be to everyone’s taste, it’s one of the best things for finding or rediscovering the drive needed to succeed in being your best self in the real world. David, thank you for your writing and for getting up from every trip and fall—so many times that failure has been turned on its head. David/Goggins—thank you for this book!

A good deal — un buon affare
Revisado: 05-20-21
It doesn’t sound like the narrator is a native speaker—her accent is slightly off and there are a few silly mistakes. This unfortunately diminishes the credibility and plain enjoyability of the work. Assuming it’s substantively accurate, though, this is a very efficient, useful, quick dive into basic business terms with plenty of examples of everyday usage of each word. There’s also a fair amount of bonus material within the examples, bringing the total to well over 100 words. Money and time well spent.

Overall, it was a pleasure from beginning to end for me, as I’d been curious to learn more about both Garry and AI. He gives me a better than good introduction because his storytelling brings complex topics like grandmaster chess and AI down to my level—barely a novice.
I thought the narrator could have been better prepared in places, but a decent job. It was good to hear Garry’s voice in the intro and would.have been nice to hear him in a few of the chapters as well.
Looking forward to hearing Garry’s other books.

Historia
The story of Donald Trump’s rise to power is the story of a buried American history - buried because people in power liked it that way. It was visible without being seen, influential without being named, ubiquitous without being overt. Sarah Kendzior’s Hiding in Plain Sight pulls back the veil on a history spanning decades, a history of an American autocrat in the making. In doing so, she reveals how our continual loss of freedom, the rise of consolidated corruption, and the secrets behind a burgeoning autocratic United States have been hiding in plain sight for decades.

Is there a future for America?
Revisado: 01-30-21
Spoiler, yes. Sarah Kendzior’s insights to the present era, how we all got here, and where we might be going are presented with the sharpness of a razor’s edge. Sarah’s perspective is that of an expert on authoritarian regimes and the influences of multinational corruption, an “American girl”, and a fiercely loving mother who seeks to protect her children by inoculating them (and anyone who has the good fortune of hearing her) with the truth.
This book isn’t always pleasant to hear. But just as only truth (pleasant or not) can do, reading it in its entirety is deeply satisfying. And, despite the darkness and harshness of some of its truths, the book ultimately provides what I feel is solid ground from which, if we and our children aren’t able to build and grow immediately, we can at least defend ourselves from the destructiveness of non-stop lies from would-be authoritarians in our midst.
Today is January 30, 2021. I’m still waiting for the deluge of indictments. But since I’m not a prosecutor, I’ll try to help the Country I love by telling the truth in the everyday ways available to me. And sharing “Hiding in Plain Sight” — .
