I Will Miss Her
Revisado: 03-07-25
Wholeheartedly recommend. Kept my attention to the last page. Sweet revenge. Correcting unfairness that life bestows on innocents and the consequences of fixing those mistakes. Great story with a smart female protagonist. A worthwhile use of a credit.

Historia
Emma Carpenter lives in isolation with her golden retriever Laika, house-sitting an old beachfront home on the rainy Washington coast. Her only human contact is her enigmatic old neighbor, Deek, and (via text) the house’s owner, Jules. One day, she reads a poorly written—but gruesome—horror novel by the author H. G. Kane, and posts a one-star review that drags her into an online argument with none other than the author himself. Soon after, disturbing incidents start to occur at night.

Dizzily Twisty -in a good way
Revisado: 02-02-24
I thoroughly enjoyed this thriller. Every time I thought I knew the direction the story was headed...wham....it went off in another direction. I like story lines like this one where vulnerable characters need to find their inner strength, strategize and make smart choices to survive. Lots of thrills, likeable protagonist, interesting villains, no sex, good narration, all tied up by the end, with some gore but also some humor. This was the first book I read by this author. I plan to read/listen to more.

But when he unexpectedly calls you from the beach, you hear the urgency in his voice. Something is very wrong. The beautiful waitress from the restaurant last night has been found lying dead in the sand. And the police want to question your husband about it. Sure, you saw him glance at her over dinner a few times, but you know he didn’t have anything to do with the poor girl’s death.

Just ok - not worth a full credit
Revisado: 12-28-22
This is one of those books that starts off strong with the suspense of a promising whodunit. However, instead of subtle clues left by the author for a clever reader to spot, there is only misdirection. The problem with this book is that the misdirection is mostly a lot of boring sub plots. Spoiler...there is a rape which those triggered may want to avoid. Overall, The Resort was ok in the way that a mediocre beach read is ok - readable enough although formulaic and forgettable. Narration was quite good.

Too Slow
Revisado: 12-22-22
I was intrigued by this story about two 10 year old girls and a horrible crime in a small English village. Unfortunately, after a promising start, nothing happens until the last hour. The bulk of the book is slow and boring. The ending was contrived and the overall result left me feeling unsatisfied. I feel as if I was at a restaurant, having ordered a favorite meal, waiting forever for it to be brought to the table, eating the food, despite it being unappetizingly bland, and then regretting the experience.
Lucy Price's narration is excellent as usual. As Audible listeners are aware, bad narration can ruin a great story but good narration cannot save a mediocre one.

He was so handsome
Revisado: 12-16-22
That line is repeated at least a dozen times as are several other lines. Shoulders sag repeatedly, Cheeks grow warm repeatedly, chairs turn over repeatedly. The writing is annoyingly amateurish, the plot drags, and the story is an unoriginal take on obsession and revenge after a breakup. That is a story line I usually enjoy but not this time. I read another book by this author which was better. I recommend dumping The Ex.

Twists and Turns
Revisado: 12-08-22
I will be checking out this author's other books because this book kept my interest throughout. The writing is good and the character development is excellent. I could clearly imagine the characters. The excellent narration helped make this story memorable. I liked how the readers, and the protagonist, learn about the wife from her diary. That was an interesting way to handle flashbacks. I wasn't keen about how the author tied things up at the very end and that is the reason for 4 vs 5 stars. If you enjoy domestic, well-paced, suspense stories, as I do, then you might like this book.

When Freya Miller is struck by tragedy, losing her husband and her home within a short time, she is burdened with many worries. The main one being where she and her five-year old daughter, Skye, are going to live. A chance meeting with the charismatic Dr Marsden changes all that. He offers the young mother the most amazing opportunity: an apartment at one of London’s most exclusive addresses for a fraction of the market rental cost. It’s an offer Freya simply can’t refuse.

Stay Away
Revisado: 12-08-22
The premise and description seemed intriguing. Unfortunately, the book was a total waste of my time. The Apartment is perfect if you crave dull, uninspired, juvenile writing, a protagonist too stupid to be believable, and a ridiculous, boring story where nothing much happens. How did this book get published? I am adding this author to my Never Again list.

Unsatisfying
Revisado: 10-07-22
Starts off strong but dwindles halfway. No explanation for what happened. Not a cliff hanger, more of a cliff bomb. The writing is good, the narration is very good, but the story is too undeveloped even for a novella.

The perfect neighborhood can be the perfect place to hide… Who wouldn’t want to live in Brighton Hills? This exclusive community on the Oregon coast is the perfect mix of luxury and natural beauty. Stunning houses nestle beneath mighty Douglas firs, and lush backyards roll down to the lakefront. It’s the kind of place where neighbors look out for one another. Sometimes a little too closely…

Weirdest Narration Ever
Revisado: 10-01-22
Imogen Church should only narrate U.K. accents and should never ever attempt to narrate an American accent. I enjoyed the story. It was a pretty good domestic thriller though it did stretch credulity and I rolled my eyes at the absurdity towards the end of the novel. I read it at the beach and it was a good beach read. I found myself continually distracted by the narration and kept wondering if this is what Brits think Americans sound like. It is strange going back and forth between normal sounding British characters and American character's accents speaking with the strangest off tune sing song spoof of American accents that I have ever heard. If you can get past the narration, the novel is worth a credit on sale.

Old Scars Never Heal
Revisado: 07-30-22
Excellent narration. Good story about a solitary detective who is assigned a cold case that he once worked on and which he now views from the vantage point of an experienced investigator. Are there connections with a current case about a death...a case he is not allowed to touch? The Ruin is a good police procedural with an interesting story that weaves the past with the present. It is well written. Although this book is part of a series, the main story is tied up nicely at the end in a way that is satisfying to the reader. My criticism is that the story is a little slow. It picks up towards the second half but it took a while to get there. The characters are a bit one dimensional. Several are too good, or too bad, and lack complexity. However, other aspects, such as the challenges of working in a hostile are more nuanced.
