Historia
Why are we here? What's the point of existence? On the "big questions" of meaning and purpose, Western thought has been dominated by the dichotomy of traditional religion and secular atheism. In this pioneering work, Philip Goff argues that it is time to move on from both God and atheism. Through an exploration of contemporary cosmology and cutting-edge philosophical research on consciousness, Goff argues for cosmic purpose: the idea that the universe is directed towards certain goals, such as the emergence of life.

I have to leave words with my review so i’ll just say that i found the book to be brilliant in the way that it argued for unconventional ideas in a forceful manner. It leaves a lot to be answer but exciting research should do that. That’s where we come in I suppose, to continue to think through the implications and develop them further.

Historia
This is an audiobook about math, but it contains no numbers. Math Without Numbers is a vivid, conversational, and wholly original guide to the three main branches of abstract math - topology, analysis, and algebra - which turn out to be surprisingly easy to grasp. This audiobook upends the conventional approach to math, inviting you to think creatively about shape and dimension, the infinite and infinitesimal, symmetries, proofs, and how these concepts all fit together. Join this freewheeling tour of the inimitable joys and unsolved mysteries of this curiously powerful subject.

A wonderful introduction to mathematics
Revisado: 04-23-24
I have read and listened to a ridiculous amount of books. What this book did better than almost any I have ever read is condense and simplify information in the clearest and most accessible way. Some books are simple at the cost of rigor, clarity or depth. This manages to check all the boxes. Truly an astonishing achievement.

Historia
Mikage is an orphan raised by her grandmother, who has passed away. Grieving, Mikage is taken in by her friend, Yoichi, and his mother (who is really his cross-dressing father), Eriko. As the three of them form an improvised family that soon weathers its own tragic losses, Yoshimoto spins a lovely, evocative tale with the kitchen and the comforts of home at its heart.

note: this is 2 stories (and there’s nothing wrong with that)
Revisado: 12-31-23
this is 2 stories, and there’s nothing wrong with that. there’s no reason why we should think that 1 story is better than two. it would have been ok even had it been 5 stories. or even more than that (like a collection of short stories), because Banana Yoshimoto’s writing is beautiful, and authentic, and there’s nothing else like it in the world. it’s definitely worth a credit. 2 credits even. maybe even more than that. it’s really that good.

A guide to manipulating your friends and family
Revisado: 10-22-20
The process requires a bit of deception and dishonesty, and so it isn't the best guide. Towards the end, the authors give this away themselves. Any approach that is built on inauthenticity will not foster empathy, as the book's advertisement claims. Instead of trying to instill doubt into people's minds, I suggest listening for their concerns, and creating a space of safety, empathy, and respect where both sides feel heard and understood. This does take some skills, and a book on how to do this needs to be written and read. This is not that book.

Historia
In this timely, highly original, and controversial narrative, New York Times best-selling author Mark Kurlansky discusses nonviolence as a distinct entity, a course of action, rather than a mere state of mind. Nonviolence can and should be a technique for overcoming social injustice and ending wars, he asserts, which is why it is the preferred method of those who speak truth to power.

A brief, necessary account of the history of nonviolence
Revisado: 07-29-20
An important, necessary sketch of the history of nonviolence. But it is only a sketch. Much more to be said about the different ways people have thought of nonviolence or the strategies they have used. It’s a start though. It skews to the analysis of nonviolence as an anti-war movement, and as an alternative to war.

The OG book on positive communication
Revisado: 11-11-18
A book everyone should read. The OG book on positive communication and validation. A necessary message. Not everyone might agree with the approach, we live in an overly cynical world and that is its own kind of tragedy. But, I recommend you just give it the benefit of the doubt for a bit. If nothing else it serves as a model for some of the things you can think about and look for when you are having a conflict or are in any kind of relationship. #communication #lifechanging #Inspiring #tagsgiving and #sweepstakes

Actually one of my favorite books. I think it's just a good book in itself, regardless of whether or not you're a victim or survivor of abuse, or if you work with them. It's just a book everyone should read. But if you are the above, you should 100% most definitely read this book. #abuse #psychoeducational #tagsgiving and #sweepstakes

An accessible, expert introduction to one of the greatest minds of 19th century. Whether you're completely new to him, or if you're already familiar with his work, Kierkegaard: A Single Life presents a fresh understanding of his life and thought. Kierkegaard was a brilliant and enigmatic loner whose ideas permeated culture, shaped modern Christianity, and influenced people as diverse as Franz Kafka and Martin Luther King Jr. Though few people today have read his work, that lack of familiarity with the real Kierkegaard is changing with this biography by scholar Stephen Backhouse.

Revisado: 11-11-18
Kierkegaard was a real one. Idk how this ended up on audible, given how few academic type books are on here but, I appreciate it. Doesn't go too much into the philosophy but it gives a good overview of what he was doing and why he was doing it a lot of the time. #IntellectualBiography #Academic #WesternPhilosophy #tagsgiving #sweepstakes
