Historia
What makes a romance novel a romance? Writing a well-structured romance isn't the same as writing any other genre - something the popular novel and screenwriting guides don't address. The romance arc is made up of its own story beats. Told in conversational (and often irreverent) prose, Romancing the Beat is like sitting down to coffee with romance editor and author Gwen Hayes while she explains story structure - the way she does with her clients, some of whom are regular inhabitants of the best-seller lists.

Helpful and entertaining
Revisado: 10-13-20
This book is a great, to the point, and succinct explanation of the beats that a romance writer must hit to keep readers engaged, and satisfied.
The quick read is entertaining and the narrative reads with perfect humor in her tone.
Great resource!

Historia
Nicholas Hunt is the man I hate. For good reason. His opinion of me is tainted by prejudice even before my arrival at his grandmother’s estate, and my first impression of him is just as abysmal. His arrogance and icy demeanor make it clear that he’s the type of man who’s best handled at a distance. Fortunately, space shouldn’t be an issue inside this Gilded Age mansion and its lush gardens. If I stick with the servants and he keeps to his sailboat, we should hardly cross paths at all. Unfortunately, at Rosethorn, I find that all roads eventually lead to Nicholas Hunt.

great rags to riches/enemies to lovers story
Revisado: 09-29-20
I really enjoyed this steamy rags to riches romance. Main character Maren wrestles with her past in foster care and must pull herself out of a hole created by a decision made in a single night. While she feels her new life at Rosethorn, courtesy of benefactor Cornelia is too good to be true, she is terrified of losing it. When Cordelia's protective nephew, Nicholas, shows up the sparks between him and Maren are undeniable.
Maren's back story felt real and poignant and her relationship with stranger, turned doting benefactor, Cornelia, was touching. However, I found myself questioning the portrayal of Newport wealth, thinking at times this story could have been set in 17th century England. The steamy scenes between Maren and Nicholas made up for any setting confusion entirely. Great read!
