this was the first book I've ever listened to by Colleen Hoover and it was fantastic. I appreciated the raw honesty of it . I would recommend this to any lovers of romance.

This is not science fiction it is a fantasy novel. Everything is based on magic. Also it is not a romance. the main characters don't even kiss or end up in any kind of relationship in the end. Both the cover and blurb were completely misleading. It must be fantasy people loving this because the science in the science fiction was so bad at points I laughed out loud. It's disrespectful to lovers of science fiction that someone thinks they can just paste some aliens into a story and call it "science fiction."

Fellow science fiction and alien romance listeners heed my warning, this is twelve hours of magic and fantasy.

Outlander Unabridged is Great

I had the original abridged cassettes of Outlander when I was a high school student in the early 90s so I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about the unabridged version by a different narrator. I am not going to lie it was difficult at first, but I got used to it and in the end, I really became to love Davina Porter’s version.

I’ve also read the whole Outlander series but the first three books, ‘Outlander’, ‘Dragonfly in Amber’, and ‘Voyager’ remain my favorites.

As a middle-aged woman though I have to say some of the things that happen in this book and subsequent books haven’t aged well. I feel that this is because the author and myself and so many other women fall between what was happening in romance in the 1970s and 1980s which we grew up on and what was okay then and what romance readers want now (and frankly what some of these younger authors write I find appalling and there’s no question how their fantasies were influenced).

Anyway, I still loved this audiobook and would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Diana Gabaldon and historical romance. However, I would hesitate to recommend it to an overly woke young woman who would only find the faults with it. Yes, Jamie does give Claire a spanking but again, I like, Diana Gabaldon, and so many other older women, we understand why and why it isn’t a deal-breaker for their relationship. However, this seems to be such an experience-driven thing those younger readers are just appalled, (as appalled as I am by their fantasies sometimes). So, I loved this but was surprised, not surprised, by some of the reviews.

I am a fan of most of Laurann Dohner's work so it's no surprise that I thought this re-release was mostly good. It's got a great premise, Ellie works for a pharmaceutical company (already there we know something dodgy is going on) and the company is splicing human and animal DNA, creating exotic new species one such experiment turns out to be our hero. I never really had a thing for Wolverine or the Incredible Hulk but I'll take Fury. Fury is obsessed with Eillie, but she needs to teach him how to love and how to not be an animal, tame him.

However, there were some issues. Lots of references to rape that I'm not sure were necessary to get the point across. Also, there was some awkward dialogue, especially with the character Justice, but I don't know maybe this was purposely done. The villains are one-dimensional, but then again, it's a science fiction romance with a bare-chested man on the cover, I really didn't expect more and so many books in any genre can be so much worse so it was a moment of 'really' then 'never mind' and moving on to what the narrator was saying next.

Overall, I thought it was good and it held my interest. I would recommend this audiobook to Laurann Dohner fans and science fiction romance listeners. The narration by Vanessa Chambers was well done.

I feel like I am on a bit of a Star Trek kick for a minute here. This is the autobiography of Captain Kathryn Janeway. It is very appropriately read by Kate Mulgrew and she does a great job, obviously. The book begins with Janeway’s childhood up to what readers know through the canon of Star Trek. There are lots of added details to make her life fuller, but no real surprises were thrown in. I can recommend this audiobook to anyone who is a fan of Star Trek Voyager and of Star Trek audiobooks in general it is a great listen and the 8 hours fly by.

Cue the disco.

This vintage Apollo moon-obsessed era space thriller was pretty good, although I wouldn’t say I was so taken in that I had to stop my ironing to listen. The story is very original, and I’m not surprised, as I imagine to be an astronaut you need to be a couple of parts crazy, crazy equalling creative thinking and the rest sheer intelligence. So, it’s different than any other space thriller I’ve listened to or read with some nice turns. I am sure I am missed some of the science, as it’s about on the same level as Andy Weir’s writing with attention to technical detail, but since I’m no professional I’m going to assume it was all very well done. The story was cleverly told from two points of view, the Americans and of course The Russians, which was a way to remind us all of what the political climate was back then. I felt the murder mystery came late in the book and then the author was rushed or rather in real life this is how things happen and are dealt with and he’s not adapted to fiction writing (as this is his first book) and that you need to slow it down. Regardless of it didn’t take away from the story for me, just something I notice often in first-time space opera writers and I wonder why their editors don’t catch it if I as a reader can see it. But I will stay in my lane now. I’m no editor. It was a good audiobook.

I would recommend this to anyone who likes hard science fiction, Andy Weir’s books, and retro space thrillers.

There is no doubt if you read or listened to The Martian that you could read or listen to this book and know exactly who the author is by similarities in storytelling and story which is both a good and bad thing depending on what kind of reader/listener you are. For me, I don't mind formulaic romances so I definitely don't mind the same kind of story being reformatted for another "adventure". My only real issue is that the first half of the book was very science-heavy and as I am not a scientist I found it boring to listen to because it was over my head. The second half of the book was much more relatable with the characters and so I enjoyed it.

Is this mind-blowingly different scifi? No. Is it well-written and really entertaining? Absolutely. The narration by Ray Porter is flawless and I can recommend this audiobook to any fan of science fiction really. I don't think this book is really going to appeal to too many people outside that niche like The Martian did though. I cannot put my finger on exactly why perhaps too much science? Andy Weir is still an automatic buy for me.

Ms. Owens can absolutely spin a wonderful tale and take us all to a different place.

I usually talk about narration last but Cassandra Campbell did such a fantastic job at narrating this book I thought I was in the south and not just listening to a tale about it, but a local. However in saying this. I am not from the South so southern people may not agree. But I’ve been to the South on many occasions and sorry Southern people it passed with flying colors for me.

About the book, it was presented to me as a romance. There’s very little romance, but that is okay because the book is fantastic even if it’s not your normal choice genre. That’s when you know a book is truly exceptional it appeals to readers outside the niche.

The story is about Kya, a “marsh girl”, and the book covers her life from six years old to her death about sixty years later. Her story is raw, painful, and emotionally beautiful. However, it’s not told in a marvel kind of action every minute way so if you are expecting that this is perhaps not the book for you. There is a lot of world-building, flashbacks, and fast-forwards. The characters’ motivations as in life are nuanced and somewhat subtle.

I would recommend this audiobook to most people who are in the mood for a slower kind of story. If you are looking for a fast thriller this isn’t it.

PS. There are so many negative reviews and what I don’t understand is why people continue with books after the second chapter if it’s not the kind of book you want to read or listen to? Do people not read blurbs? I was under no illusion I was going to be on the edge of my seat with every line with this one... haha.
