Medical Thriller with Cults & Gene-Editing & More
Revisado: 06-26-21
What I liked?
After The Pain Colony (I reviewed this back in April of 2020) I was captivated and rather impatient waiting for the second book in this series, The Rage Colony. And once I got my hands on the audiobook, I was not disappointed. The story picks up with Allison Stephens (now going by the name of Layla) who is well within the colony that preaches the mantra that "with pain comes peace."
In this story, she explores a little more of that pain and doubts that there's any attached peace. This story doesn't go into the life of Allison Stephens prior to joining the colony very much, as the first one did. Instead, you see her previous "Allison" personality start to come out as she starts to question the colony, what it stands for, what's her true place, and what it might be hiding.
I liked that the author featured this ambivalence in her.
What I didn't like?
Not a dislike of the book, but I truly couldn't stand James. After everything, he turns out to be no better and possibly the worst of offenders in Allison's life.
Overall:
If you enjoy the genre of medical thrillers with that of cults and gene-editing, I think you'll like this. I gave this 4 stars.

Romantic Suspense with Great Characters
Revisado: 03-15-19
What I liked?
The characters were multifaceted and the story was both stopped and started and all the right places. Natalie Anderson and Scott Taylor were two people with their own personal demons and their reasons for what they do and how they act. The situation in which they are is anything but cut and dried. Just when you find your feelings are concrete on one character, you’ll find that they’ll be muddled once again.
What I didn’t like?
It started off a little slow so I wasn’t quite sure if I could get into it. Also, there was another couple that was featured in the middle of it. They were interesting enough, but I wanted to find out more about Natalie and Scott and this other couple brought things to a halt.
Overall
If you like great romantic suspense with amazing characters, you may want to give this a listen.

Paranormal, thrilling, romantic
Revisado: 11-28-18
What I liked?
The characters, living and non, are very well developed. I routed for both Rain Christiansen and Danny McKenna and wanted to see both of them happy and with each other. Despite their flaws, they were realistic human beings that you could see yourself within. I also enjoyed the paranormal aspect of the story in that Rain can see and hear those no longer living. I thought that was pretty cool as well.
What I didn’t like?
Nothing. I liked everything about this listen.
Overall…
It was a great story with all the action and adventure that any mystery or paranormal story lover would enjoy. Definitely “lit”

The wolf totally gets a bad rap in Little Red Riding Hood. There he is, eating that naughty girl up, and the huntsman barges in with his big ax. I’ll bet she loved it. I’ll bet she adored her big, bad wolf right up until she didn’t get her happy ending. This wolf doesn’t disappoint in bed. Ever. Everywhere else? Absolutely. I’ve got a long, colorful history of disappointing my pack mates and fellow bikers in the Breed MC. I’ve never met a rule I wouldn’t break, but now I’m ready to make up for it. I’ll atone for my crimes. Live happily ever after.

The Steamy Paranormal
Revisado: 10-27-18
What I liked about the book?
First off, the narrator is amazing! Noah Michael Levine is my absolute favorite. Next, I enjoyed the writing itself as well. It was almost like dialogue within dialogue, which made it personable and put the reader in the moment. I also liked the characters: they were diverse and funny and you could tell one from another as well as root for them. Finally, I liked the paranormal aspect of it as well, which gave the story a realistic yet otherworldly feel.
What I didn’t like?
Imagine if you were dating or wanted to date a guy and you found out that this guy was actually a wolf. Now imagine what your response to getting this news would be. I know what mine would be. If anything, I’d need some time to process this new development in my relationship to-be. And that’s if I’m not running away. Rain, Fang’s love interest, on the other hand, just seems to accept this with no additional questions or at least nowhere near as many as one would think she would ask. I wanted to see more in that respect because anyone else would have so many questions, conditions, etc.
Overall…
Despite Rain’s lack of asking important questions or responding to certain things the way you would anticipate, I think that’s what makes her character all the more interesting. The same with Fang and all of the other Breed MC members. They are who they are because of the interesting things they do and responses they give. So, if you like paranormal romances, give this one a try. It's pretty lit.

You’ll never hear anyone wax poetic over an organ quite like they do the heart. When you’re lost in the world? Follow your heart. When your love for someone is unwavering, unparalleled and unprecedented? You give them your heart. As a lead pediatric cardiac surgeon, I knew better than anyone that the heart is equally as powerful as it is delicate. The heart giveth just as easily as it taketh away. And until the day Kelly Potter darkened my doorway that was all just part of the job.

Great narrators; childish main characters
Revisado: 10-21-18
I loved the narrators and even some elements of the story concerning emotion. What I did not love was the main characters. They are two people in their mid thirties and you’d expect them to grow up and actually discuss their feelings with each other instead of pulling away from one another and basically giving a “you know why” as the reason because That’s for people in their early twenties. These characters should have been well passed those behaviors. They were two very immature people who honestly deserved each other.

Time travel and Murder...
Revisado: 10-15-18
What I liked about the book?
I haven’t read much historical fiction and I’m not the biggest fan of time travel stories, but this book caught my interest and helped to open my mind up a bit more in this regard. It melded time travel and murder in the 20s. Very intriguing. It flowed very well between the time periods (2017 to 1925) and didn’t seem at all clunky as some tales of time travel do.
Despite the fact that this book is the third in a series, I could easily follow what was helping and where the author was taking me.
Furthermore, Chaz Allen, the narrator, really brought the story to life. He was the perfect choices in bring the story to audio.
What I didn’t like?
The wrap-up, which I will not give away, seemed much to clean for a story centered on travel. I expected a lot more consequence for a journey so far into the past.
Overall
Indiana Belle isn’t perfect but if you’re looking for a spooky and mysterious story this Halloween or at any time of the year, I would recommend it.
John A. Heldt's work is definitely lit :)

Elisabeth Rodgers & Leighann Dobbs = A great combo
Revisado: 10-05-18
What I liked?
The premise is your standard cozy mystery but with a twist. A car accident leaves divorcee Wilhemina Chance (Willa for short) with the ability to see ghosts. And one of those ghosts, Lavinia, the librarian of Mystic Notch, asks Willa to solve her murder. That alone is a clever storyline and was enough to hook me.
I also liked the way the characters were introduced in this town. Leighann Dobbs made it very natural and didn’t grind the story to a halt to reveal who was who. Each person was in the middle of the action with all their characteristics and foibles. Each one contributed and had a relationship to the chaos, which I love. I love knowing who the people I’m reading about are when all hell breaks loose.
What I didn’t like?
It’s not so much something that I didn’t like, but rather an aspect of the story that I would have liked to understand better. Willa has a cat named Pandora, who talks with other animals but doesn’t vocally interact with any humans. However, despite this, Willa can (sort of) understand her, especially when it comes to clues about the murder Willa is trying to solve.
Now, there’s a reason explained as to why Willa can see and hear ghosts, which is the car accident. But the cat thing is a different story. Why can she understand this cat? Was that something that was a part of the accident or is it just the standard pet/owner relationship? Is Pandora the only animal Willa can somewhat understand or are there others?
As you can see, it birthed a lot of new questions. Speaking of which, ghost Lavinia literally pops up numerous times to check in on how Willa is doing in the investigation to the point where I wondered why Willa was necessary to do the investigating in the first place. Why couldn’t Lavinia herself properly ghost, listen and look for clues, and maybe ask Willa to do a little follow-up? It seems like that would have been simpler.
These may be things that get answered in the series down the road so I tried not to dwell too much on them.
Overall, Leighann Dobbs is hungry and did a really awesome job. The narrator, Elisabeth Rodgers, just added the icing on the cake. She was perfect for bringing voice to the story. So, if you’re looking for something cozy and spooky to read this Halloween, I’d recommend Ghostly Paws. It’s zany yet realistic and relatable, eerie yet warm and welcoming.

Part Murder She Wrote, Part Poirot
Revisado: 09-20-18
What I liked about the book?
I loved the atmosphere way more than I initially thought I would. I’m normally more of a gritty mystery reader, so I wasn’t quite sure how I would react to this one. I pleasantly surprised.
Morgan C. Talbot made Moorehaven seem like a place I’d want to visit. The bed-and-breakfast on the coast of Oregon was previously the home of mystery writer A. Raymond Moore and currently caters to experienced and aspiring crime novelists. Just learning more about Moorehaven and the town surrounding it made me feel cozy and intrigued and the Poirot references definitely clinched it for me early.
Secondly, the characters, major and minor, sucked me in. First off, Moorehaven is run by Pippa Winterbourne who, in the middle of dealing with these writers and their crazy research in town and doing her job, gets caught up in a real murder with a connected mystery that dates back to the Prohibition era. As you can imagine, a business full of crime writers on a daily basis would beyond interesting and the author illustrates that well. At one point, Pippa references how, because of the writers she works with, she knows multiples ways to kill someone. The way each character is written, no matter how minor they might be, you can tell that attention was paid to each detail regarding each person. You can easily distinguish who is whom.
Lastly and certainly not least, Amina Cee’s narration was absolutely fantastic. Her voice and the story were a perfect match.
What I didn’t like about the book?
The only thing I didn’t like was that Pippa was a little too nice sometimes in situations where she needed to maybe yell a little bit more, though based on where she works, she obviously has the patience of a saint and has built up a great deal of tolerance for crazy.

Doing too much
Revisado: 08-10-18
I received the audiobook from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Here's what I liked about the book
The premise. It seemed simple enough and easy to follow.
What I did not like:
I only wish that the rest of the book operated this way. First off, as I said I had the audiobook so this review applies to that.
Anyway, starting with the narrator, he did not fit with the book. According to the synopsis, the book was supposed to meld paranormal and crime. But listening to him made it feel like satire. Not sure if it was supposed to be, but I wasn’t crazy about it.
Next, I’m okay with a meld of book categories and when its done right, a book or audiobook can stand out. This book seemed like the author tried to add clichés of a variety of genres (i.e spirits floating around, etc.)
Overall, this was so confusing that I listened to this a week ago, and I couldn’t tell you the central point or even one character from the book. Just too much all around.
