Historia
At 24 Amy was a typical type-A law student: smart, driven, and highly competitive. With a full course load and a budding romance, it seemed nothing could slow her down...until her heart began to fail. Amy chronicles her harrowing medical journey from the first misdiagnosis to her astonishing recovery, which is made all the more dramatic by the romantic bedside courtship with her future husband and her uncompromising desire to become a mother.

Personal story of long term illness
Revisado: 10-17-23
I enjoyed this very personal account of the author’s challenges and tenacity in addressing cardiac disease and receiving a transplant. I would have preferred a more focused narration without all the character voices for the author, Scott, Dr. Davis, Casey, nurses and others. I felt the variety of character voices detracted from the story, and in the case of the author’s voice, added an edge to her tone that was at times unpleasant and wouldn’t have been there if I just read the book.

Historia
Years after her grandfather's death, journalist Sarah Wildman stumbled upon a cache of his letters in a file labeled "Correspondence: Patients A-G". What she found inside weren't dry medical histories; instead what was written opened a path into the destroyed world that was her family's prewar Vienna. One woman's letters stood out: those from Valy-Valerie Scheftel, her grandfather's lover who remained behind when he fled Europe six months after the Nazis annexed Austria.

The story of Sarah Wildman’s dedicated search through Vienna, Berlin and Eastern Europe for traces of her Grandfather’s Jewish girlfriend, left behind under the Nazi regime when he came to the U.S., is deeply compelling.

In Seattle in 1962, Walter Cousins, a mild-mannered actuary - “a guy who weighs risk for a living” - takes a risk of his own, and makes the biggest error of his life. Diane gets pregnant and leaves their baby on a doorstep, but not before turning the tables on Walter and setting in motion a tragedy of epic proportions.

Compelling, Humorous Retelling of Classic
Revisado: 06-21-23
Insightful, funny, pop-inspired retelling of the Oedipus story. The Audible version had great narration. No, it isn’t “Snow Falling on Cedars,” but this book brought another side of Guterson’s great writing forward and I enjoyed it.

Historia
In the eyes of eighteen-year-old Hua Hsu, the problem with Ken—with his passion for Dave Matthews, Abercrombie & Fitch, and his fraternity—is that he is exactly like everyone else. Ken, whose Japanese American family has been in the United States for generations, is mainstream; for Hua, the son of Taiwanese immigrants, who makes ’zines and haunts Bay Area record shops, Ken represents all that he defines himself in opposition to. The only thing Hua and Ken have in common is that, however they engage with it, American culture doesn’t seem to have a place for either of them.

This heartfelt, poignant memoir was beautifully written and deep. I loved this Audible version, because it was read by the author. This is a multilayered story that pulls the reader in. Thank you Hua Hsu for sharing your memories of Ken, and yourself with us.

Historia
Dating to the ninth century BC, Homer’s timeless poem still vividly conveys the horror and heroism of men and gods wrestling with towering emotions and battling amidst devastation and destruction, as it moves inexorably to the wrenching, tragic conclusion of the Trojan War. Renowned classicist Bernard Knox observes in his superb Introduction that although the violence of the Iliad is grim and relentless, it coexists with both images of civilized life and a poignant yearning for peace.

This book is abridged! But doesn’t say that!
Revisado: 10-25-22
I am in a book group that is reading The Iliad. I have been reading the excellent Penguin version, translated by Fagles, as a book. I was highly disappointed to discover that the audible version of the Fagles’ translation (with the same picture on the front) has been highly abridged. Don’t they realize that people in school, academia and book groups might want the unabridged version? And that it should indicate “abridged” if that is the case? Disappointing.

Moving Story, Evocatively Read by Timothy West
Revisado: 02-16-21
Small House at Allington offers a beautifully intertwined story with many characters, some humorous, some experiencing tragic situations. Lily Dale’s difficult circumstance is central to the book, but there are many subplots reflecting the themes of faithfulness, and promises kept and unkept. The separate strands of the story are skillfully woven together, creating a complex and moving novel. Timothy West is a great narrator — having listened to the first five Barsetshire books, I have thoroughly enjoyed his narration. Bravo Trollope!

Shallow Approach to Fascinating History
Revisado: 04-11-19
I enjoyed the first half of this production, in particular the details of Elizabeth's childhood, marriage, coronation, and early years as queen.
I selected this work hoping for an in-depth look at this major public figure and members of her family. Instead of providing insight, during the latter half of this work it often seemed that I was listening to a reading from the National Enquirer.
I felt that Princess Diana in particular was passed over. There was little mention of her charitable works, or her outreach to others. As the AIDs epidemic came on, Princess Diana opened the UK's first HIV/AIDs clinic and was photographed shaking hands without gloves with a man with AIDs. At a time when those with AIDs were being ostracised, she set an example for the world with her compassion. Elton John rewrote "Candle in the Wind" in her memory and played it at her funeral -- the only time he has played this version in public. I would have liked to have gained some additional insight regarding Diana's character, and also that of Queen Elizabeth II.
Bottom line -- I was looking for more than a rehash of royal gossip.

In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.
