Based on a decade of research and on interviews with many of Mao's close circle in China who have never talked before, and with virtually everyone outside China who had significant dealings with him, this is the most authoritative biography of Mao ever written.

Fascinating. Very raw.
Revisado: 02-12-25
I would warn anyone reading this that nothing is glossed over. The atrocities enacted under Mao’s orders were truly atrocious. They are described without sparing anyone’s feelings. Be prepared.
It was a heavy book. I had to step away and come back a few times, just to maintain positivity in my real life. The research is extremely thorough. It is a quite objective biography. I didn’t feel there was any attempt to sway opinions one way or another, just a stark account of his life as the authors pieced together their years of research and interviews. For those interested in Mao, it will give you a pretty full picture. Well done.

Such a fun book. Made me think of my Grandma.
Revisado: 10-31-24
I too, am a quilter. I grew up crawling under the quilts in the frame and watching the stitches go in, and the quilts coming together. I loved this story. The connections, the characters, the topics. It is a cozy comfort read and makes me want to try hand piecing my next quilt.

Historia
Deborah Harkness first introduced the world to Diana Bishop, an Oxford scholar and witch, and vampire geneticist Matthew de Clermont in A Discovery of Witches. Drawn to each other despite long-standing taboos, these two otherworldly beings found themselves at the center of a battle for a lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782. Since then, they have fallen in love, traveled to Elizabethan England, dissolved the Covenant between the three species, and awoken the dark powers within Diana’s family line.

Love the further witch’s history
Revisado: 09-25-24
It was fun to revisit the characters from the original trilogy. It was nice to get so much of the back story of the witches as the original trilogy jumped right in and the focus was only Diana, and less on other witches or the history of witches.

Seriously disappointing gay/bisexual nonsense
Revisado: 07-21-24
This was not a magical story. Simply telling people that something “felt like magic” does not bring magic to your book. This needs to be labeled as gay or LGBT fiction because, in the end, that’s what the story was. I was seriously disappointed because I was expecting magic, hoping for magic, world building, and fun. This was a gay romance and it had no magic worth its salt. I felt no anticipation of the world of magic that is normally felt when some sort of magic is touted as a major plot point. Seriously disappointed.

This book was a treat. It involved WWII, and loss, but managed to stay hopeful. The performances were fantastic and the story had me sucked in immediately.

Wonderful until the last few chapters.
Revisado: 05-24-23
I was loving this book and story development and the characters and that it was a clean listen. And then the last few chapters are basically open door and lots of swearing. Why do that when you’re ahead? If sex is you jam, go ahead. But I like my stories to leave the door closed. I’m an adult and don’t need that spelled out, thanks.
