Historia
When we meet Carrie Sun, she can’t shake the feeling that she’s wasting her life. The daughter of Chinese immigrants, Carrie excelled in school, graduated early from MIT, and climbed the corporate ladder, all in pursuit of the American dream. But at twenty-nine, she’s left her analyst job, dropped out of an MBA program, and is trapped in an unhappy engagement. So when she gets the rare opportunity to work at one of the most prestigious hedge funds in the world, she knows she can’t say no. Fourteen interviews later, she’s in.

A rich, honest, moving book
Revisado: 02-16-24
I listened to this book over the course of three days. It was very gripping. This is in part because of the narration--which is great--but I think it's even more so because of the story. The author is very honest in her self-exploration of the choices that led her to a life in finance, and the consequences of her decisions for others--and herself. She gives the reader entry into a world that I did not know much about and explains the mental, emotional, and physical transformation that it worked on her. It's also a poignant and nuanced account of life as a Chinese-American woman, with a very layered, fair (but at times very brutal) depiction of her household growing up. She's a talented writer and I admire her very being very frank in sharing this difficult story, albeit one that ends on a very hopeful note.

Historia
It’s 1992. Like every other seventeen-year-old boy, Joe has one eye on his studies, the other on his social life – smoking, Britpop, girls. He’s looking ahead to a gap year full of travel and adventure before university when his teacher – attractive, mid-thirties – takes an interest in him. It seems like a fantasy come true. For his final two years at school, he is bound to her, a woman twice his age, in an increasingly tangled web of coercion, sex and lies.

Very well written and narrated. Gutting and important. May listen to again. I do hope the author continues to write more.

Historia
In this fully updated second edition, the author clearly introduces and assesses all of Freud's thought, focusing on those areas of philosophy on which Freud is acknowledged to have had a lasting impact. These include the philosophy of mind, free will and determinism, rationality, the nature of the self and subjectivity, and ethics and religion. He also considers some of the deeper issues and problems Freud engaged with, brilliantly illustrating their philosophical significance: human sexuality, the unconscious, dreams and the theory of transference.

Merger of philosophy and psychoanalysis
Revisado: 09-27-20
The best book I have read for providing a philosophical foundation for psychoanalysis—and for explaining why philosophy should incorporate it. Uses Aristotle, Williams, and the literature on moral psychology to this end. Also a succinct and powerful illustration of Freud’s ideas, with useful critical insights on transference, religion, and the nature of pleasure and trauma. Will listen again
