Anna's Complex Character (I need a book club!)
Revisado: 02-19-25
What a complex time to be a woman! I want to be her apologist and many things about her remind me of myself in earlier days. But she was headstrong without being confident enough to accept her lover's love and seemed to keep sabotaging her own good fortune. And sorry, but how could she leave her son, who she adored and who adored her? And then emotionally abandon her daughter and love child?
She would have been well-served by a strong women's support group AND Zoloft.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

The interconnectedness of the communities on chicken Hill, and the character development were both very good.
Revisado: 01-27-24
I appreciate how the story highlighted the way that humans trust their own tribe and do not trust other tribes. Americans and non-Americans similarly vilify or excuse people, depending on whether they are in or out of their own tribe. Jewish, or Christian; Low God African, versus other members of the African diaspora; mayflower immigrants or more recent arrivals. These are the “tribes” that are described in the story.. But the story was too long and drawn out in the details and took too long to get to the action part of the story, in my opinion. the word crafting and writing per se was lovely. I think it would have been better to have been more concise.

Long, thorough, interesting premise
Revisado: 07-23-23
But also too long an too repetitive. It would have been better if shorter and pithier. And more adventures like the barely described time as a spy for the French during the resistance I’m rather than yet another bottle of champagne and another description of lovers who forget her everyday.

Thanks to Amy Harmon for bringing Samson to us
Revisado: 07-01-23
I had no idea about Deborah Samson but she embodies so many aspects of feminism that have been hard to explain. It’s not wanting to be a man, it’s wanting to be and do and dress however one wants. Join the marines or the join the ballet. And of course now that desire for freedom to express, to identify, to live as one’s heart desires crosses genders, races etc. Deborah Samson was an amazing person. Thank you!

Like Thanksgiving dinner, always satisfying
Revisado: 06-20-23
Some might find the details of historical fiction, imagining what life in the colonies was like, boring, but not me. I am in medicine and love to hear how one might deal with various ailments in an old days. And some might not like to hear a brief rehash of past episodes, but I like sitting around the table and hearing family and friends re-tell familiar stories, so I loved it, and feel like I got to immerse in the lives of old friends once again - much like Brianna and Roger must have felt coming back. Not as much “action” it’s true, but great dialogue and a good number of story lines that were well managed. The narrator is excellent! Thank you Diana (and Davina) for sharing Claire and Jamie and all the Fraser clan with us again!

Revisado: 02-22-23
This is not an exciting book. It is a thoughtful, captivating book. Like others of her books, it made me wish I could was a member of the Turtle Mountain Chippewa tribe and could move more easily in and amongst the unseen and misunderstood ways of animals, nature and all that we cannot see. I was sorry to be finished with the book. I love that the author performed it.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Barbara Kingsolver knocks it out of the park
Revisado: 01-11-23
She always writes about issues important and relevant to today’s society, and this is no different. She never dips into preaching at us - a problem in some of her books - but relies on storytelling at its best. Consequences of not investing in children - despite high handed rhetoric and so called Christian values - the perfect storm of cheap drugs, crappy education options and poverty flamed by certain Pharma greed. And character development at its best. Outstanding book.

Ok that was hard and real and really well done
Revisado: 11-19-19
I had no idea what this book was about before reading and the author slowly drew me in. By the time I realized I would not be able to walk away from the story, I was reading like I might watch a scary movie - my fingers in front of my eyes. But I had faith she would lead me back to safety and she (the author) did. I’m a physician and have known people (patients) who have endured horrific things at the hands of adults who should love them - their stories of self redemption are usually pretty messy and not linear, but Eleanors story is certainly more satisfying. her observations of “normal” society and customs were very funny and insightful. Thanks for the hard, but thoroughly engaging and enjoyable book Ms Honeyman! And the outstanding performance Ms McCarron!
