The most heartfelt audiobook I’ve ever heard
Revisado: 02-12-25
This is assuredly the most heartfelt audiobook I’ve ever had the privilege of hearing in almost 5 years of membership. Read it now because one never knows when one’s own mortality, or that of a dear one, may come knocking. It provides wisdom beyond words for dealing with terminal illness, helping a friend or loved one grieve, preparing for death of oneself or a loved one, and how to grieve from the moment one has to face an unbearable loss. Along with this, comes inestimable wisdom for how to live now, in the guise of a heartfelt memoir by this rabbi with over three decades of experience in the paths of life and the loss of his own father after a decade with Alzheimer’s. This book is for those of all faiths, or of no faith. it is such an important book that I have ordered a hardcopy, too. Thank you, Rabbi Leder!

Historia
Though unappreciated in his own time, Johann Sebastian Bach has ascended to Olympian heights, the verdict of contemporary audiences long since overruled by succeeding generations of music lovers. But what makes his music great? In this series of 32 lectures, a working composer and musicologist brings his exceptional teaching skills to the task of helping you hear the extraordinary sweep of Bach's music. You'll understand the compositional language that enabled him to compose such extravagant, unbridled music while still maintaining precise control of every aspect - beat, melody, melodic repetition, interaction, and harmony.

A desert island audiobook!
Revisado: 07-09-23
I doubt I can say anything more than others have, but just want to add a thank you to Robert Greenberg for this extraordinary labor of love about a man who labored for love of God and music. He’s right: Bach lives on through his music, and for us lay people it is Robert Greenberg who helps keep him alive. if you have any interest in music of any type, I cannot recommend this audiobook highly enough.

Death is not waiting for us at the end of a long road. Death is always with us, in the marrow of every passing moment. She is the secret teacher hiding in plain sight, helping us to discover what matters most. Life and death are a package deal. They cannot be pulled apart, and we cannot truly live unless we are aware of death. The Five Invitations is an exhilarating meditation on the meaning of life and how maintaining an ever-present consciousness of death can bring us closer to our truest selves.

A true gift
Revisado: 03-09-23
Thanks to the author who so beautifully narrated his own heartfelt wisdom and experience from a lifetime of service. His words indeed inspire me to live more fully and through that face the death of loved ones & then my own with less suffering. As others have said, this is one of the most important books you could ever read.

Great concepts

I agree with others that his narration is imperfect, but it is sincere and easily managed by faster listening speed. Useful ideas that I’ve already started to implement.

Many useful ideas buried in (my opinion) woo woo
Revisado: 01-21-22
I’m sorry, but I’m a scientist. Regardless of her insistence that they are real, energetic vibrations are not. However, if one can use those and her use of similar terms as metaphors, there is some useful information here. Yet there are better books on mindfulness and better resources for minimalism or physical decluttering. The narration is good and the author seems well-intentioned. She seems like a nice person who might even help me towards my goals, but her book not as much as other books, etc. Also, the text often mention additional & resources, which were not read, so should have should have been provided in a PDF.

Historia
Alan Gordon, a psychotherapist and the founder of the Pain Psychology Center in Los Angeles, was in grad school when he started experiencing chronic pain and it completely derailed his life. He saw multiple doctors and received many diagnoses, but none of the medical treatments helped. Frustrated with conventional pain management, he developed Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), a mind-body protocol that eliminated his own chronic pain and has transformed the lives of thousands of his patients.

These Methods are Already Starting to Work for Me!
Revisado: 09-06-21
I am in awe of this book and the work behind it, so much so that I believe this is my first book review. In a book that is short but so sweet, Alan Gordon lays out (clearly with the help of his knowledgeable and insightful co-author, Alon Ziv) "the process" for ending chronic pain. It's already starting to work for me, and while it takes time and effort, they make it easy. The book is an easy read, easy to understand (aided by the anecdotes that make otherwise-challenging concepts turn into aha moments), compassionate, and humorous. Net effect: a truly elegant solution to one of mankind's worst plagues: chronic pain. I first bought the Audible version, then wanted the hard copy for easy reference. Alan's voice is so soothing & encouraging, that it helps the concepts sink in. I've been using related methods (including mindfulness & meditation, an app for chronic pain, Alan's tell me about your pain podcast produced in conjunction with that app, and others) for some time, and each new approach adds help & benefit. But in my opinion, Alan Gordon's methods taught here are for me the icing on the cake, and (pending publication of his peer-reviewed study with Tor Wager, a neuroscientist specializing in pain and Dr. Howard Schubiner, a physician specializing in treating pain with mind-body methods) apparently the most successful evidence-based approach for treating chronic pain. What a great listen! If you don't want the hard copy, buying the Kindle version and then the Audible (so as to use WhisperSync), might be an awesome alternate way to get the most out of this work.

Historia
In Good Morning, I Love You, Dr. Shauna Shapiro brings alive the brain science behind why we feel the way we do - about ourselves, each other, and the world - and explains why we get stuck in thinking that doesn’t serve us. It turns out that we are hardwired to be self-critical and negative! And this negativity is constantly undermining our experience of life.

Revisado: 05-08-21
Thank you, Shauna Shapiro! I’ve read so many mindfulness books, but I think this one takes the cake. I plan to relisten, and to better absorb her well-stated lessons, I bought the hard copy as well. This is a book I’m sure I will revisit many times in one form or another.
